Please stop calling ICE law enforcement, that just gives gives them a veneer of legitimacy. What they enforce is not law, it's the whims of a despot.

The US does in fact have customs and immigration laws; are you claiming that those laws were not properly passed, under some kind of anarchist or Sovereign Citizen kind of theory? Or that the State has not charged ICE with enforcement of them?

I think they're saying that while ICE calls themselves law enforcement they're really just (at least acting like) a bunch of thugs. When you give a group this much money and this much power and a bunch of unrealistic goals I can see that happening.

The legislative just love getting slapped in the face by the executive. Repeatedly.

In this case, this is a federal judge.

Gah, totally intended to say judicial there. Oops.

Alien has been the legal term since the beginning. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_and_Sedition_Acts

Resurrecting obscure rasistic terminology from 200 years ago isn't much of an excuse.

It is the currently used language of the U.S. government.

That's about as ironic as carrying a gun while wearing a bulletproof vest. If the tech exists and works it changes both defense and offense.

That latter part isn't ironic at all... just because you carry a gun, doesn't mean you aren't going to be shot at.

That's the comparison I was making -- just because you target people with facial recognition, doesn't mean people won't target you with facial recognition. Gangs or Abolish ICE

Seems like this would be to collect faces of what they consider "dissedents" rather than verify citizenship which can be done much more accurately through a mobile fingerprint reader. Then again, who needs accuracy when you dissapear people without a warrant.

When are citizens’ fingerprints normally put on file, in the US? Or, for that matter, noncitizens who entered irregularly?

joined the military. they did fingerprints and IIRC they were starting to log DNA.

if you have access to profoundly expensive weaponry and training to use it, it makes sense. also if you're shipping bodies back in pieces -- fingerprints, dental records, and DNA may be the only way to figure out what happened to you.

I wonder who is storing this data, I would bet Palantir. Possibly Oracle too.

Not Palantir. Their CEO has explicitly said that they don't collect data on US citizens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-IH7EVrBbQ

that's a boldface fuckin lie

Frankly, I don't think this is a party thing. Our elected officials are mostly party line. There are a few who have actual ideals that they adhere to but the rest of them are weather vanes. You basically have to be a party loyalist to get campaign funds so, unless you can self fund, you gotta toe the line.

Party probably wasn't the best word to use there. I didn't mean it as in the discrete political entity, but more of the amorphous group. The color of the hat doesn't matter as much as what they believe in.

I agree but the argument I'm making is that the "what they believe in" part is usually, "I should be re-elected". There are very few elected officials that I believe would choose to not be re-elected rather than change their touted core beliefs.

Absolutely. I'm a legal immigrant, but delays in processing and other things when I had to adjust status after divorcing from my US citizen wife (I moved here on a K-1 fiance visa) had me involving an immigration attorney, who made the comment, "I hate saying this, but it's true. You're the right color, and with where you're coming from (Australia), nobody cares about checking up on you."

All those illegal Polish immigrants in Chicagoland (of which there are many) seem to be doing just fine.

deportations are up among other groups too (this isn't meant to suggest they aren't racially profiling):

> The number of Irish citizens deported from the United States has risen by more than 50% so far in 2025 compared to the previous year, figures released to BBC News NI show.

More like they'd come out publicly against what Thiel and Palantir are doing, given that they are members of, and colleagues within, the same communities of moneyed tech leadership.

And...what would that change about what Thiel and Palantir doing? A strongly worded letter will not lead to meaningful change against someone who does not care.

huh? public figures should not speak out against things they disapprove of, particularly by people they are known to be closely associated with? at the very least they should do it for themselves, to publicly distance themselves from something they disapprove of. Otherwise, we assume they approve, and that is the actual point of my post, which is as long as they stay silent about their colleague, we have to assume YC types have no problem with this stuff. (which we knew anyway. but their silence confirms it).

like here's most of RFK Jr.s actual family saying he should resign: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/rfk-jrs-family-members... what losers! they should have said nothing and stayed silent. because what's the use right? The use is at the very least, we know that they, the immediate family members, do not approve of their sibling's actions.
