326K (+127 deg F) and 340K (+152 deg F) for their less and more pure samples respectively. And, yes, if it's a superconductor as we understand them, that's the temperature at which it would have zero resistance as well.

It would have been more convincing if you had given real past examples rather than speculative future ones :) Although I'm pretty sure there are plenty that many people can think of, so it doesn't really detract much from your point.

Auctions, sanitary towels, retirement, banking, disposable razor, sewing machine, canned food, interchangeable parts, antibiotics, solar cells, postage stamp, light bulb, pencil, air conditioning, insurance, dwarf wheat, spreadsheet, cold chain, double entry book-keeping, S-bend, infant formula, clocks, public key cryptography, passports, batteries, printing press, video games, GPS, contraceptive pill, shipping conta…

That's just a list of good inventions.

GPS, disposable razor, many of these are not impactful enough to be "black swan but good".

And things like clocks and batteries were slowly refined over many, many years, so they don't fit either.

Nah, the fact that even emperors die is a good thing. No dynasty lasts forever, because after the first few generations, assets get diluted, someone spends the money, descendants fight, etc. An aristocracy that lives forever would be very hard to remove because those factors would be greatly mitigated.

Eternal youth != immortality; given accidental and deliberate injuries and deaths, the "half life" (feels wrong in this context) is about 1000 years.

As for dictators: it's not like guillotines stop working.

What will keep dictators (if eternally young, or their offspring if not) in power forever is competent and obedient AI manning the police and army.

Why are folks trying to prove that this material is a superconductor in roundabout ways, like levitation, dimagnetism, etc? What is the reason they don't just test to see if electrical current flows without resistance? Surely there is something I am missing here.

Because (like someone explained very well in another HW notice) you can't measure zero ohms. Any device to measure resistance ALWAYS would have a minimal value that can measure. It's far more easy to detect superconductivity using the weird things that does all superconductors in presence of magnetic fields (ie, levitation).

Yes and no. There's no possible way to have a superconductor be an actual hoverboard out in the broader world - the magnetic field of the earth is just nowhere near strong enough. Not an expert, but I would guess a direct measurement couldn't distinguish between a true superconductor and something with very very low resistance.

No. Any device to measuring resistence ALWAYS have a minimal value that can measure. They can never measure exactly zero ohms.

We would first need to build a superconducting track for the hover scooters (containing magnets) to ride on. Assuming we ever figure out how to mass produce the superconductor inexpensively. Perhaps if the track were arranged in a grid-like pattern, the scooter could use superconducting electromagnets to accelerate and steer.

I would actually welcome scooters that only work on specialized tracks. Walking safely on the sidewalk will become as easy as staying away from those tracks.

It would be SO MUCH QUIETER than tires on asphalt. No rubber-particulate pollution, either.

If I recall correctly, their patent for method covered a wide range of constituent elements, but left off gold. Maybe success in life and science isn't about becoming a billionaire? Even so - if this works out, their prizes and paid speaking gigs will cover a very comfortable life if that's what they want. I'm not sure why they should be entitled to more than that.

I think a Nobel is pretty much guaranteed at this point.

They'll make a ton of money either ways. Maybe not billionaire level, but they'll be venerated wherever they go, will be granted countless prizes, will sit on the boards of important companies, and have their pick of academic jobs - all of it entirely deserved, of course.
