That’s just patently not true for Ubiquiti. You enter the Enterprise space with them and you are paying monthly. Their very expensive Identity Enterprise monthly per user subscription and their per site support charges to be able to get help with their latest rushed release. Paying extra for Apple wallet support. And you don’t even get complete APIs in return, or proper SCIM integrations. Can’t even pull access logs…

Quite honestly it sounds like: 1. Your use case falls squarely into "you should be paying for support" territory. 2. You're setting things up incorrectly. You should be shipping logs, not scraping them when you think you need them.

I don’t begrudge paying for support, I want to. But it needs to be good.

And I want to ship logs, but they don’t provide a mechanism for all their logs to be shipped.

Don’t assume ;)

I have heard others say the same as you about Ubiquiti devices. I genuinely curious what bottlenecks you've hit. I've only been using Ubiquiti as a pro-sumer, but it has held up well for my use case of Plex and little game servers. The Cloud Key Gen 2 is underpowered depending what you do with it, and it runs hot. UniFi seriously needs to refresh it. (At least it’s better than the Gen 1. The Gen 1 was disastrously bad.) The ENAS looks like fairly nice hardware. It even has ECC RAM. Not cheap, though.

I'd be surprised if Cloud Key gets another revision, it's a dead product line as I see it. The main purpose was to provide an appliance alternative to running the controller on your own server, which is now unnecessary for most users because the routers and NVRs can all host their own controllers.

The remaining market for such a product is people who are running UniFi switches and/or APs but not the router and yet still want an appliance, which is not a large space. Most of that market either has a random server they can run it on or is willing to throw together a Raspberry Pi controller.

I'm surprised this is required. Agreed that's shady. I wonder what their reasoning is. But if you don't trust it, the fix is easy: just deny the Ubiquiti cameras and controller all internet access. That way no trust is required.

But what if I want to access my cameras remotely but not have their manufacturer access them?

I am running nginx proxy on my public IP on top of ubiquiti UNVR it works via headscale. But honestly I am super happy with their hardware and software but necessity to link your network to their cloud just be able to use 100% of features of my own hardware, make me want to sell the whole thing and buy something else.

ECC support depends on the processors that the NAS uses. A few of their NASes allow you to use ECC memory but you'd need to swap the memory installed to ECC memory. A lot of their systems use Intel cpus that don't support ECC at all so you need to carefully pick and choose.

Some of them use arm based CPUs from Amazon’s Annapurna Labs.

Their camera system isnt awful, but I would still pick Frigate over it (I have the option for both at home and have ran each). Frigate is nice in that it works with any old RTSP IP camera - many features in Unifi's NVR support only work with their own over-priced cameras. How many cameras do you have on your frigate instance? i’ve been running frigate for couple years and seemed to have hit a limit of 6 cameras. 3 of them are wireless and 3 are connected to Ethernet. Mainly adding any more seems to adversely impact detection. I suspect it was maybe because the coral TPU board was hitting its limits. So I recently switched to intel arc a380 for inference. I’m going to add more cameras soon to see it helps.

“Enterprise” First hand experience many times over: there is little more regrettable than placing Ubiquitis latest test-it-in-prod release in to an Enterprise setting.

I mean it's all prosumer grade stuff. I get hassled at work to sell their network gear over Cisco and Aruba because of the price but it's a flashy and cheap.

I had to fact check this. Turns out it is true. I was not aware on US stock exchange you can have a public company with less than 10% public float. This also makes the founder net worth of around $33B.

If you think that is bad, look into the spacex ipo. That tiny public offering is for stock that can barely vote and cannot bring shareholder actions, making them more NFTs than proper "shares" imho.

I know about voting shares and shareholder actions in US stock because they are somewhat frequently sited in all press and media. I just didn't know about sub 10% float.

I know there are plenty of ways to go around it via trust funds or other entities to hide it so the ownership could be extremely concenrtated. But having it actually allowed is something I didn't know.

It doesn't just work. It kept it as 1500 and I started having all sorts of issues. MSS clamping effectively reduces it to 1492 but that's not what I want. Something so simple as setting an interface's MTU shouldn't be a big deal, this is a dumb design choice.

Clearly you haven't read the rest of the thread. I'm comparing Unifi with OpenWRT, opnSense, vyos, etc.

I would never rely on the likes of Eero, and I don't want to shell out for enterprise gear which in fact don't tend to be great to operate either.

This reduces my MTU inside the tunnel and even though it works, it's not as efficient as using the full 1500 MTU.
