It's all about money in the end. If people keep spending money with these companies, it reinforces their notion that the money will keep flowing despite what they do. Cancelling slows down that revenue stream, giving time for other entities which are less misanthropic to catch up and counterbalance the negative side effects from these companies.

The power move is to keep keeping using OpenAI free services in order to increase their costs.

I agree with the previous post that there's hope that there's a convergence point in the not too distant future where consumer hardware can run powerful models.

At the moment, the 397Bn Qwen3.5 model (which I assume is what you're referring to) is still out of reach of most consumers to run locally: the only relatively straightforward path (i.e. discounting custom Threadripper builds) to running it would be a 512Gb Mac Studio.

However, in a generation or two (of hardware and models) maybe we'll see convergence with more hardware available with 3-400Gb of memory for more approachable money (a tough sell right now, I accept, with memory prices as they are) and models offering great performance in this size range.

What does “regulate AI” even mean? The applications it can be used for? That doesn’t work, it’s the governments that want abusive applications. The size of models? That doesn’t work, it just discourages MoE. Access by consumers? Great, now it’s just for megacorps and the military. What, exactly, would successful regulation look like?

We agreed and [largely] adhere to chemical weapons bans; perhaps this could be treated similarly

Same here, because I'm a part owner of a restaurant and we'd probably lose half our business without being on Google Maps as it's not in a busy street.

Thanks, this is a really fun way to view the data. I don't think the no-google/no-yelp filters will really accomplish this goal though. Most of the ones I examined were either variations in the restaurant name or not really restaurants (gas station convenience store, hotel with breakfast, catering LLC with no storefront, etc.) The google and yelp datasets in NYC are really quite good.
