Classically, not all jobs are considered "living wage" jobs. That whole notion is something some people made up very recently. A teenager in his/her first job at McDonald's doesn't need a "living wage." As a result of forcing the issue, now the job doesn't exist at all in many instances... and if it does, the owner has a strong incentive to automate it away.

Just the simple fact that mcdonalds is open during school hours is enough to demolish the "teenagers flipping burgers" type arguments.

A lot of this is just windows sucking major balls. Linux distros with even the heaviest DEs like KDE absolutely fly on mediocre or even low range hardware.

I got a lunar lake laptop and slapped fedora on it and everything is instant. And I hooked up 2 1400p/240hz over thunderbolt.

Do yourself a favor and order $25 Xeon E3-1231 v3/E3-1241 v3 from China. Those work in all desktop motherboards. Used DDR3 ram is also so cheap you can bump to 32GB for another $20.

easy cheap upgrades. CPU will be noticeable straight away, ram only if you are running out.

I'm glad I kept my ageing Dell Studio XPS 7100. I need to stock up on some Dell Precision towers from the surplus in case my Studio XPS 7100 breaks. This AI bubble needs to burst soon.

I am so glad when I decided to upgrade my AM4 system a few years back to a 5800X (3D model at the time I believe was just released and was questionable at the time if it was worth it outside of gaming) I wanted to build a PC from my hand me downs for my kid so I went ahead and upgraded my storage and RAM to a decent 64GB DDR4 set that ended up with a decent stable overclock.

Prices weren't great when I bought it at the time but compared to now, I'm glad I bit the bullet when I did.

The part time workers has been sorted out as living wage calculations assume full time work.
