The differentiating factor is when the hype is justified with the implementation of the actual implementation. Then it's "hype", followed by adaptation and commoditization. With "just hype" however, there is no such step. It's hype without the following implementation: NFTs, the "Metaverse", Blockchain and "smart contracts", and of course their ancestors (tulip bulbs, 3D VRML worlds, ...) weren't simply new technolog…

I'm inclined to agree on Blockchain myself. I'd happily be proven wrong, I just think there was no conceivable "ecosystem" that would make it useful.

Minor chronological point but Zapier is an IFTTT-type glue provider. IFTTT was announced Dec. 14, 2010 and launched on Sept. 7. 2011. Zapier was first pitched Sept. 30, 2011 and their public beta launched May 2012.

But zapier is easily Google-able and therefore useful as a reference name even if the commenter hasn't heard of it.

Not as easily Goolge’d as “IFTTT” with five characters versus six.

Central to this article, the author asks: "What if you just... removed the AI part?" and suggests a world of possibilities if we do. I disagree.

MCP is a protocol based on meagre structure and a bulk of human language. Either you use a large-language model to "read" this language, or you get a human to do it. The first is "AI" and the latter is... not very impressive.

Yes, it was Warcraft 2; a sly hint that I preferred Warcraft 2 to Warcraft 3.
