This has been the situation since the last 4090's melting as well. Just check youtube channels for videos of the repairs daily from these folks. It's fun to watch, less if you actually bought one.

I wouldn't buy one after watching these and have, period. The rest are beta testers, now two generations in of failure and still lining up in tents.

What was “wrong” is that enough people are willing to pay exorbitant prices for the highest-end gear that Nvidia can do most anything they want as long as their products have the best numbers. Other companies do make products with lower power draw — Apple in particular has some good stuff in this space for people who need it for AI and not gaming. And even in the gaming space, you have many options for good products…

We must be thinking about very different types of games, because even though I’m completely bought into the Apple ecosystem and love my M3 macbook pro and mac mini, I have a windows gaming PC sitting in the corner because very few titles I’d want to play are available on the mac.

I would love to get some insight from Nvidia engineers on what happened here. The 3 series and before were overbuilt in their power delivery system. How did we get from that to the 1 shunt resistor, incredibly dangerous fire-hazard design of the 5 series? [1] Even after the obvious problems with 4 series, Nvidia actually doubled down and made it _worse_! The level of incompetence here is actually astounding to me. Nv…

Maybe having cards drawing >500/600 watts is just a bad idea. Add in a CPU and such and we’re quickly approaching the maximum amount of power that can be drawn from a standard 12 amp circuit continuously.

What's the proposal here, just convince everyone to stop demanding more powerful hardware?

I think it's utterly absurd that this is the case but that's PC components for you.

Those cables fitting is a mistake, not by design. Even then the users are only a bit to blame, but in the case of deliberate compatibility there's zero blame.

Then the graphics card would have to have a transformer on it to step down to the voltage that the chips can handle.

No one uses transformers anymore. VRRs are basically mini PCs now. They run firmware and report telemetry and are crazy efficient.

In general, poorly designed cables will use steel instead of tin plated copper conductors. The differences become more relevant at higher power levels, as energy losses within the connectors will be higher. Thus, the temperatures rise above the poorly specified unbranded plastic insulator limits, and a melted mess eventually trips the power supply to turn off.

I would assume a company like NVIDIA wouldn't make a power limit specification mistake, but cheap ATX power-supplies are cheap in every sense of the word.

You might think you're joking, but there are gamer cases with space for two PSUs, and motherboards which can control a secondary PSU (turning both PSUs on and off together). When using a computer built like that, you have two main plugs, and the second PSU (thus the second mains plug) is usually dedicated to the graphics card(s).

The joke actually removes this connector problem though, while a secondary PSU does not.

So as you say, monitoring multiple inputs happened on the older xx90s, and most cards still do it. It's not hard.

Multiple DC-DC converters is something every GPU has. That's the only way to get enough current. So all you have to do is connect them to specific pins.

Derbauer and Buildzoid on YouTube made nice informative videos on subject, and no it is not "simply a user error". So glad I went with 7900 XTX - should be all set for a couple of years.

I had two AMD 7900 XTX and they both overheated like mad. Instant 110°C and throttle. Opted for a refund instead of a third GPU.

Sapphire Nitro has a really nice heatsink for 7900 XTX. It works well even under full load.
