Would they even be able to compete with OpenAI at this point? Even without Greg and Sam they have Ilya, the models they've trained so far, institutional knowledge, datasets and billions from Microsoft. Could OpenAI be at escape velocity anyway to AGI just continuing on the track it's been on?

Was it a right choice to make ChatGPT accessible by the public?

To a person who is not an expert at prompting LLMs, ChatGPT is basically a shitty version of Bing Chat (aka Copilot). Especially the free version - it's an outdated model which cannot search the internet (or does it strictly worse than Bing Chat).

Why does OpenAI pay for access to a shitty version of Bing Chat?

There's only one possible reason for this: raising money at a very high valuation. They burned through hundreds of millions dollars to show VC that they have 100+ M users (and growing rapidly!) to raise at valuation ~$100B.

The board did become un-boardable in any future company, but they are not resigning.

I absolutely guarantee you when Microsoft owns 50% that they paid $50,000,000,000 for, that Microsoft is really in charge. The board and Ilya will all be gone within a month.

That makes very little sense. Microsoft spent the last week enthusing about the leadership and vision of OpenAI and their strong partnership, even in Nadella’s keynote speech at the Ignite conference. It’s Microsoft’s biggest event of the year. This makes them look pretty stupid, and the announcement came before market closing hours on a Friday, which put in dent in their share price.

However, I would not be surprised if Microsoft take advantage of this unexpected situation for their gain.

Are you forgetting its a nonprofit? How could the board be fired? What does their charter say is the mechanism for removing a board member?

Yeah, I misspoke earlier. Although nobody has actual power on paper, public and investor pressure can be just as influential.
