I love Silicon Valley as much as I loathe Big Bang Theory. Talk about a show that plays to what "regular" people think nerds are like. I am absolutely dumbfounded how popular it is. Then again, Chuck Lorre has a track record for that type of garbage...
I used to like BBT, but lately it has devolved into the characters just being mean to each other all the time. You are spot on with your comment, too.
The quip that made me "Hmm" on BBT was "How often are you laughing with the characters? And how often are you laughing at them?"

#363I find it hits a bit close to home, so much so as to ruin the comedy sometimes... it’d be funny if it weren’t so true, which is depressing. Still watch it, and love it though. And super impressed that a Hollywood production finally understood Northern California. That never happens (see: The Social Network, Hackers, every Steve Jobs movie, etc.)
Hackers is best enjoyed, IMHO, if you interpret it as a hyperbole of the media stereotype of the hacker culture of the era. I tend to revisit it every year and have grown to appreciate it more and more with time. Also, Sneakers and The Net.
Hackers is my secret joy.
The more you rewatch it, the more you realize it knew exactly how over the top it was being, and is doing so with a wink and grin.
And there are far too many truely geeky Easter eggs in there to say it's oblivious. Technicolor rainbow, indeed.

Well throughout history the education gap has always existed. "Bread and Circuses". In every culture, from the east to the west. What has changed today is hyperconnection. That changes the rules of game.
“Bread and circuses” is not a comforting comparison.
Not comforting, but such is the way of history.
Democracy, even representative democracy, and especially first-past-the-post representative democracy ... is inherently unstable.
The things that started happening to the USA since (at least) the 16th Amendment? All of this has happened before. All of this will run its full course as it ran before. And all of this will happen again unless the right people, at the right time, will learn from the Roman Republic, where we and our ancestors have nigh-unanimously failed to do so.

Mike Judge created Silicon Valley? OK, now I have to watch it.
The first episode isn't great but if you push through the first season is good.
I’ll second this, first time I tried I got about 5 minutes in, decided it wasn’t funny and moved on. Later I gave it a better try, deciding to at least watch the entirety of the first episode and I ended up binging much of the first season.

Any shows of the same style on Hollywood? Do the show producers feel something similar to some in their own industry or their surreality is just reality for them? Are they brave enough to mock powerful people they may wish to work with later? Would be fun to watch one on Hollywood and they should have very intimate details to bare.
