What if the whole point of the war was planned to generate trading opportunities? Every crazy tweet or announcement another cash out. It's like every time you see a poorly run business and you think, how can they stay open? The answer is it's usually a laundering operation, a tax shelter, and who knows what else. The message to us poors is, nothing these people do is as it appears; there's always a bunch of stacked,…
I have been thinking about this a lot lately. If you look at effects of geopolitical events and who profits and loses, rather than stated intentions. This global oil crisis, the Ukraine crisis, tariffs ect. It's the equivalent of the "the purpose of the system is what it does". Oil crisis: Trumps friends profit on insider info, US oil industry (also his friends) profits, Russia profits because they are another big oi…

I was not implying that Iran would or should use nuclear weapons. Only acquire them. For the same reason I think it’s a good thing the USSR acquired nuclear weapons. Mutually assured destruction has proven to be incredibly effective at preventing the use of nuclear weapons, and preventing hot war (not proxy wars though). I think if Iran acquired nuclear weapons the region would stabilize. Israel would be forced to st…

The article doesn't even include the words "ideologue" or "extreme" or make a similar claim. Very weird and defensive response.
"But ultimately Carlson’s escalating toxicity, which included an undercurrent of white supremacy and a penchant for demeaning women and minorities, led Lachlan Murdoch, the then chief executive of Fox Corp, to pull the plug, the book says." How obtuse are you being?
There are many Nice & Respectable people who are extreme ideologues. Words have meaning.

It really isn’t. The fact that it seems like people can’t use descriptive adjectives on HN is always so bizarre to me.

The whole retail theft epidemic (and the ensuing Union Pacific cargo theft ) was a corporate scam perpetrated by local news and law enforcement PR departments.
This is willful (intentional) ignorance.

This insider trading isn't hedge-funds working hard to get an edge. It's political insiders trading ahead of public statements. They are getting gains not by dint of being incredibly smart, nor from working very hard. Instead its from abusing their position in power. And by doing so in this manner, they are taking money away from the actual productive people trading in the futures market. Besides, as Matt Levine ofte…

Instead its from abusing their position in power. The article specifically argues that it's extra bad beyond just corruption. That's the part I'm pushing back on. >The stench of corruption is overwhelming. Yet aside from the raw corruption, these incidents also raise a…

You are being deliberately obtuse. Unbearably rude and "extreme ideologue" are completely different things. There are many Nice & Respectable people who are extreme ideologues. Words have meaning.
> There are many Nice & Respectable people who are extreme ideologues
You can't actually be serious.

That's incredibly poor reading comprehension on your part. > There are many Nice & Respectable people who are extreme ideologues You can't actually be serious.
The underlying problem here is that you don't know what "ideologue" means.

It wasn't at all. There's still a serious problem with shoplifting. Wal-mart would not be removing self-checkout if this were just a PR campaign. At my local CVS, they just started locking up the bulk candy. You don't take the the sales hit and the expense of those locking cabinets unless you have a real shrinkage problem.
Walked into a CVS midday in SF. There were even cops not far away. Poor rent a cop in there is just yelling “police have been called” while three or four people are roaming around grabbing stuff and putting it in black bags.
The rest of the shoppers are going about their business, so I do too. I figure if the robbers mess with a shopper or anyone else that’s felony assault and that breaks the grift. The grift is to rip cheaper stuff they can resell but below certain thresholds. Was pretty sure they’d have no weapons too since that would make it a felony.
By the time I’m checking out with my melatonin gummies and toothpaste they’re taking off.
I can break one stereotype though. They were white. They were wearing masks but looked like probably white teenage dudes.
I mean why not. Teen hormones and free money.
It was surreal in a way I’m not describing well here. People were not even reacting.

The Nice & Respectable Fox News crowd, that exiled Carlson, were just worshipping a "golden calf" idol of Donald Trump yesterday. The underlying problem here is that you don't know what "ideologue" means.
