What is the state of today’s folding phones, did the hardware improve over the first attempts?

1. Is the unfolded screen a continuous flat surface? (I.e. is the vertical bulge in the center gone?)

2. Are there gaps around the hinge or screen edge? Is the phone weatherproof?

3. Are there gaps when the phone is in the folded state?

It is if you're using Google Fi -- $700 off with 24 month commitment to keeping Google Fi

Fi user here: I don't see this offer anywhere. Inside the Fi store it shows a $1000 trade-in offer but that's it.

I'm on the fold 3 for about 1.5 years I guess. The crease is no issue. I always compare it to reading a magazine; the page doesn't need to be flat to be good, and the screen of the food is nearly flat. You don't notice it.

Phone has been rock solid no issue. Love it.

I just don't understand who wants these foldable phones, especially at the $1799 price point. I guess a use case is wealthy frequent travelers who don't want a separate device with a larger screen to watch movies/videos on the go? Someone help me out here.

I'm really perplexed too especially since the crease is still so visibile and the build quality so weak. I feel like carrying small phone and a tablet/laptop is still a significantly better value any way you look at it unless you travel a lot without any storage on your human. I found the most ergonomic travel setup for me is a Lenovo Yoga laptop and the small samsung s22. Both of which can be bought for less than 18…

I had bought a tablet but I rarely bring it outside of home except longer trip. Even if I bring it, it's annoying to take out from my bag for a short time use. I finally bought Fold3 and I put it on my pocket everyday. Having it 100% of time is too useful for everything. Crease is too minor problem than that.

These foldables are a great demonstration of why the screen diagonal is an unintuitive metric.

This device has a 5.8” screen when folded, and a 7.6” screen when open. Looking at those numbers, it doesn’t sound like a very big difference. Yet anyone can see that the 7.6” screen is twice as big as the 5.8” one!

The diagonal only made sense for TVs because the aspect ratio was fixed at 4:3 (and later 16:9). It shouldn’t be used for computer screens or phones.

I understand the laws of physics are in effect, but the big thing keeping me from even remotely considering a foldable is the durability of the internal screen. The newer Galaxy Fold's have some sort of plastic/glass composite, but it still scratches super easily, and it's not serviceable at all.

My Fold3 had problem twice for screen protector peeled off. After it peeled off, screen start broke after a few months. My insurance plan fixed it for cheap. There are no other problems, dust and water isn't a problem as IP rating. I'll never leave foldable tablet (until AR glass become a thing), but also I'll never consider foldables without great insurance plan.

Only charge up to 80% battery unless you need the full charge and the battery generally lasts much longer

Is there a place that has empirical data on this stuff? Like what battery factoids are still true with the latest devices or not? I would honestly love for phone manufacturers to outright build in some software to build in best practices if they actually exist. Don't let me charge to 100% at first or something!

The quadcopter community has dig up research on the longevity of lipo batteries under different charge levels. Note that they do push their batteries really hard. Their findings apply as long as the latest devices still set 4.2V as 100%.
