Designers are ruining software in general. iTunes, the iOS music app, and Google Maps are just a few pieces of software that started out relatively usable (if not exactly stable in the case of iTunes), and have been iterated and stylized to the point where I routinely get enraged by them. At least Google Maps has walked back that terrible accordion thing that literally drove me crazy. I basically think design is like…

> Designers are ruining software in general. I agree with you. But what I find hilarious about it is that in the 90s, there was a meme that software engineers cannot do usability very well, and you need specialized designers. I think it all comes down to humility. Think about and respect the user. Do usability studies and follow their results, like Microsoft used to do in 90s. Don't let your notions of aesthetics ove…

In other words, we used to have developers who don't respect users, now we have designers who don't respect users. The users are pretty much where they were before, plus we get to have arguments between developers and designers. If the average farm was run like the average software company, all the animals would be dead within a week except for one cow/chicken/tractor hybrid optimized to maximize karma on HN.

"Designers are ruining software in general"

Designers and Engineers collaborate to make products.

Some suck, some are great.

Blame bad design on bad designers, bad software on bad engs.

Don't blame design or eng for existing.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

Every designer, or UI/UX person should work on a shitty CRT with a flicker and a bad green channel. If the design doesn't work under those conditions, it doesn't work.

Similar thing stands for programmers: they should work on workstations with 1GB RAM and Pentium 4 or older. If their code doesn't work well in this environment, it shouldn't be put into production. Especially if these programmers write for web .

omg, yes
