The AVP has greatly enhanced my productivity through access to a large virtual mac window inside a variety of environments, facilitating deep focus while reclining, sitting outdoors, or traveling. And the 3D image conversion of treasured photos is remarkable. On the whole, I've used it near daily for over a year and a half, and marvel at how many naysayers there are.

Can you elaborate on how you use it with your Mac for productivity ? What’s the experience like vs using a large 5k monitor etc? What about for long hours?

That’s cool. It would work for the mirror display functionality, but handover is more like CRIU in the sense that it becomes a process on the target host. Moreover headphones are also switching. So it seems a bit more involved than either.

I think you can solve the physical process problem with simple containers or virtual machines.

The price would be easily justified if the hardware could also be used as a regular VR headset and hooked up to a flight sim or gaming PC.

That’s worked for awhile. ALVR.

Yea, ALVR is interesting, I have yet to try it out. I suspect latency is a real issue though, wish I could try it with DCS before shelling out $3500 : )

IIRC, Apple M4's 10-core GPU supports three 6K 60mhz displays. Enough for each eye and 1 virtual desktop. Vision Pro M5 PR says something about 120mhz. So the M5's "40% faster GPUs" is being used to double the frame rate? Being noob, I'm guessing each desktop requires 3 additional cores and 16Gb VRAM. Of course, we can think of many strategies (using current hardware) to support additional desktops, spaces, windows,…

Apple SoCs have weird external monitor support purely because of SoC IO, not GPU power. 60mhz and 120mhz are your typos, because that's an insane refresh rate. It's 60Hz and 120Hz, not mhz... > So the M5's "40% faster GPUs" is being used to double the frame rate? You always have to read full marketing BS when you read it, it almost always says "X times faster than Y in Z workfload".

Am noob, so I hadn't considered the I/O. Thanks. I just assumed they'd use more pins (or now pads).

> "X times faster than Y in Z workfload"

Mosdef.

Also, reducing energy use (heat generated), mostly thru process improvements, allows each new generation to run that much faster.

My sentiments exactly. This would be such an easy purchase to justify if it weren't just a toy-- no other VR headset touts to display text so crisply. But instead, their only market demographic are people who really enjoy going to theaters alone. I'm very eagerly looking forward to Valve's headset coming out.

Valve already has a headset out…well before Apple had one. https://www.valvesoftware.com/en/index/headset

As did Microsoft, but as usual Apple "did it first".

It was incredible how much Vision Pro marketing was based on stuff Microsoft had demoed for HoloLens a couple of years before.

i’m afraid i’ll look back and regret that i didn’t capture 3d memories of parents and grandparents when it was technically feasible because of a few dollars…

Well, there are stereo cameras… The digital ones came and went with 3D TVs though so you have to go to eBay. I am enjoying the stereo cameras I have accumulated though.

Canon's got two 3d fish-eye lenses for their RF and RF-s mount cameras. Their software can even produce Apple spatial images. https://global.canon/en/news/2025/20250610.html

I've had the Vision Pro since launch, and the only thing that keeps me coming back to it nearly daily is the Mac Virtual Display for my MacBook Pro. It's just so useful to have a huge display wherever you want it - no hunching over looking down a small laptop screen. This is especially useful on a plane where I'm not even able to open the laptop completely due to the tight space. My main gripe is: Why do I need a sep…

The only use case I’m interested in is long-haul flights. How comfortable is it to wear for an extended period? Do people interrupt you to ask you about it? Are you able to use all the features sitting in economy while gesturing?

Overall yes (with some caveats below), it's comfortable enough to wear for a few hours. I'm usually in the window seat and I try to be discreet, so nobody has really asked me about it.

All of the features work well even with no internet (for linking the mac & vision pro). Travel mode takes care of issues with the plane's movement and the sensors work excellent for gesture / tap detection even in complete darkness, and there's never a need for big sweeping arm gestures with the vision pro - you can operate it in a small space.

I bought the belkin headstrap to help distribute the weight, and I imagine the success of that type of accessory is what prompted apple to introduce the new dual knit band. With that extra support I can wear it for a few hours but I definitely have goggle marks on my face for a while afterwards - like you would have after skiing.

For stateless processes, probably, but there are non-trivial problems reconciling state - think of your IDE / vim along with maybe a debugging session of another process. You need a lot of things in place to enable this use case for productivity goals. This is not an uncommon scenario for the current audience (I use AVP almost exclusively for work and think many users are engineers).

There may be simplifications to this, but I suspect it eventually lands in a distributed system problem involving state and strong consistency semantics. I’ve done this for most of my engineering career and all I can say is that they are fun problems to work on because they are some of the most difficult ones :)

Since they only list France and Germany as EU countries I guess the rest of us in the EU are never going to get the Vision Pro? While I could get one from Germany, when I did that with the Google Pixel I ran into a whole bunch of trouble when it needed to get repaired. Since Google required an address in Germany.

I’m living in one of those irrelevant EU countries and am considering getting one from Germany. Do you know if this is going to cause issues when downloading apps from a non-German Apple account, etc.?

As far as I read online that is not going to be a problem. However if you need a repair, you might run in to problems (like needing a German address).

Do you never entertain guests with your home theater system? I believe you when you say that it could replace the experience for yourself, but, at least for me, hosting with my home theater is the main driver for improving it.

People come over to your house just to watch TV?

I have a 120" ALR projection screen, 4K UST projector, modular semi-circular couch that seats 12 and a decent sound system. I host ramen + movie nights where I make some ramen from scratch and we watch a sci-fi movie together. I also do video game nights where people come over to game on the big screen.
