Yeah, it's very irritating, and one of the first thing I do when watching a Youtube video is to increase the Playback speed to 1.5x or 2x.

I think you are spot on.

Just want to add that the content consumption was also hindered by the technology.

Fun Fact: Vine was created in the same year the first CNN completed ImageNet with (much) higher accuracy than others contestants.

I do pay for YouTube premium. But the amount of ads in the video itself is just too much. Everybody has a sponsor to talk about multiple times in theirs video. And then there is the various interaction reminders. And YouTube stills shows me ads for movies and whatnot. I am now combining YouTube Premium with uBlock Origin and SponsorBlok to get a decent experience.

There is an add-on called SponsorBlock that automatically skips the sponsor 'ads' in the video content itself.

Unfortunately this doesn't work for the app.

(Yes, I've heard of NewPipe - I want to use the official app.)

I think the biggest difference is that the number of mobile-app users worldwide is double that from 2016, when Twitter announced they were shutting vine down. When Vine started in 2012 there were only ~1B smartphone users.

The average data bandwidth also increased.

Novel but this, and any other metric that App Annie is using, is only a crude approximation. An inefficient video codec would result in higher battery usage.

It would be an issue if Youtube's doing it for their own benefit, but they are just honoring Nintendo's request to not show that content to minors, so Youtube isn't at fault here.

This is a bit of hit for US cultural dominance and influence. How so? Almost everything I watch on tiktok is made by American content creators..Is TikTok proper even available to Chinese residents?

It's all about controlling the distribution of the media. The media content doesn't matter if it doesn't reach the audience at all.

This is intensely offensive. US tech companies are banned, robbed, and defrauded by China. We have no chance to compete with them in China, yet they can come here and freely. Tiktok should be banned.
