Curious: are there any republicans left on HN? I have no concept of how you can defend this

(not a repub) I don't defend it, its outright fraud, but I also accept the reality that it is a more visible, and perhaps exaggerated, form of what has been ongoing forever. Those who seek power seek it to: 1. Enrich themselves and their family 2. Wield it to achieve their means The "pay to play" is rife everywhere. The contractors who get a sweet deal from local / fed government, the competition is stifled. The sena…

One way to think about it is that visible corruption is a constant fraction of invisible corruption in the system. Like a fixed fraction of an iceberg that is visible. One can estimate total corruption in the system by what is visible/flagrant. Based on this, the order of magnitude of corruption being done by this admin is orders of magnitude more than prior ones.

Given that about a third of the voters are fully in support of this, and likely about similar numbers are oblivious, I expect that nothing will be done about it once this admin goes out of power.

Maybe a few people will be made scapegoats to pacify the third that want justice (likely low level/weak ones), but the top level of perpetrators will be untouched and keep most of the loot.

I'm surprised this isn't an impeachable offence.

Impeachment requires a Democrat majority. (for some reason this attracted a downvote? Obviously Republicans are never going to impeach a Republican President? I cannot imagine why you would think they would?)

Impeachment doesn't accomplish much anyway. Conviction in the senate requires 75% votes and that is not happening even if this admin starts concentration camps for opposition.

Classic liberals and libertarians both favor individual freedom and limited government, but libertarians generally take the limited government bit a little further. Militarized police is definitely one of the areas I disagree with Republicans on, along with abortion restrictions. As for thought crimes, it's a toss up IMO, but I view Democrats as more likely to try to legislate against them. I'd like federal governmen…

It seems like you learn about politics through propaganda. When I hear "classic liberal", I think of the philosophical origin of liberalism: Locke and Hobbes. Libertarian contains the same root word, but is not similar to liberal other than that. If you pursue freedom, and individual liberty and are a US citizen, there's no way to consider GOP policy as providing more freedom or liberty. The only 2 areas I can think…

I don't think many people would agree with that. Other than their philosophical differences in their approach to dealing with externalities (classic liberals favoring preemptive regulations and libertarianism favoring compensation for damage to property rights), I don't see that much practical difference between them.

Okay. Let's assume they're roughly equal and both never evolved beyond personal liberty or whatever you mean by practically the same.

How on earth could you ever claim to be in favor personal liberty, and support GOP over Dems? GOP are literally trying to enforce a state religion at the federal level in 2026. The list of similar or worse infringements on liberty is truly unprecedented and for me, mind boggling.

Or let's ask the inverse: how do democrats infringe on your liberty or others?
