I mean obviously they had a point? No one wants to lose their job.

Everybody wants to lose their jobs. Almost by definition your job is something you do not because you want to, but because you need to earn a living. Even if your job coincides with your hobby, you would prefer not to have your economic welfare tied to it in a way that drives how you engage with it. We are on the verge of making this possible, if a bunch of myopic morons -- people who have never been right about a si…

You're using a very loose definition of "losing your job".

Not everybody agrees with your definition of what a job means (some people are very passionate about their jobs; not me but I understand their point of view), and regardless, "losing your job" is a thing that is forced upon you and is a source of distress for most people, not something people "want". Many people throughout history, after losing their jobs, never recover (either psychologically, or in terms of the economy not giving them a place to recover).

To be clear, I don't subscribe to the following view at all, but a lot of people derive their self-worth from their occupation. Don't you remember, a few years back, an infamous comment made by someone on HN stating that "if you're fired from your job, you've failed as a person"? It was thankfully downvoted to hell, but it goes to show you your perception of jobs and job loss is not at all widely shared.

Even if nobody wanted to live without a job, until we reach some sort of post-scarcity utopia, the current AI trend is a threat.

the sex doll thing was intended as a metaphor throughout this thread. we've been slaves for thousands of years, that bit hasnt changed. what has changed is that people nowadays no longer care about themselves because they are fried. watching life on a screen feels close enough to the real thing - why bother living at all, living is risky and can hurt you. the usual answer to that would be testosterone pushing us to d…

My guess is we'll end up divorcing human reproduction from human sexuality at some point anyway. I don't know if that'll be a net good thing or a net bad thing, and don't have a strong opinion either way, but I do know that regardless of any debate about the causes of low birth rates, we are no longer subject to the evolutionary pressure that, however accidentally, gave us what intelligence we have. (Many of the reli…

i do not intend to advocate for religion, least of all american neo-christianity (which has very little to do with the ten commandments and very much to do with a hyperreal facsimile of jesus being puppeted to make money for a select few). the intended argument is that when progress down one branch falters, one would be best off reverting to the known stable state. deleting morality has reverted us much further than anyone on this forum will give us credit for - i look at oration a century ago and cry at what we've lost. sexuality already is divorced from reproduction; its the example that woke me to hyperreality having come true. people do not have sex to make babies, they run around fucking like animals for the sheer pleasure of it. our senses have become detached from the purpose they serve - the map of the territory has overflowed the territory, baudrillard's very definition of hyperreality is embodied. i do agree with the next steps of your guess, that is going further down the track of huxley's brave new world. thanks for sharing your perspective and sharing a little bit of hope.

So, how about responding to a point I made in this thread, today, instead of a post made by "someone on HN a few years back?"

That post seems to have gotten your goat, and I can understand that, but I did not say (and would not have said) anything like it... and I don't, in fact, remember it.

We can't reach post-scarcity without AI. If we could have, we would have. It's technology -- and only technology -- that is even giving us the luxury to think and talk about post-scarcity.

It was only a counterexample to illustrate my point. I did address your point in general, that your assertion that "everybody wants to lose their jobs" is both tone-deaf and false.

> We can't reach post-scarcity without AI

Maybe. But more importantly, it doesn't explain away people's justified fears.

Actually most serious music fans consider Dylan's best work to be in the 70's period. New Morning, Saved, Planet Waves, Basement Tapes Source: Worked in record store for 15 years.

The only consensus among serious music fans is that there is no consensus among serious music fans. Source: me, serious music fan. A lot of things about Dylan got empirically better throughout the '70s, I'll give you that. Deeper concepts, more challenging structure, yada yada yada. The problem is that I don't decide what I listen to based on anything empirical. If I'm standing around thinking "man, I want to listen…

I can't tell someone not to listen to their favourite Dylan, but in reality we serious music fans often do decide based on empirical factors, we just don't think about it. The "Deeper concepts, more challenging structure, yada yada yada" are all things that go into making the music more interesting and satisfying for your brain, and that's why we keep going to them.

Some people appreciate simplicity more, or folk more than rock, but many people with Dylan, just like the social commentary more than the music itself.

Are we ready so far down I to the LLM denial mindset that we consider an author spending multiple months crafting this to be "worthless" and less investment then your casual reading?

No, I believe this is a great post. It’s awesome. Even more so because it’s AI generated, as it shows what AI can do when given a lot of quality material to work with. I’m just talking about the general topic about the usefulness of an “this is AI generated” classifier.

> general topic about the usefulness of an “this is AI generated” classifier.

exactly what i'm trying to get at too. And my thesis is that this classification method is pointless - it's just as pointless as saying things like "this author went to harvard", or "he/she came from a poor background".

This sort of article really needs at least a vague clue as to what it is about. It's a long article and from skimming I see chat of farming, software, GPS. I can't tell whether this is worth investing time to read if I can't even tell what it may be about

It's worth reading. It's about AI.

I posted this before it came out that it was AI-generated. I still thought it had some interesting stuff in it and would say I don’t regret having read it. But is it worth reading? Not as sure.

Eh. Why would I give him the same credit I would give a writer. Or why would I give a writer the same credit I would give someone who created the AI prompts and scaffolding to generate this? Being unhappy about not being able to call oneself an author, ends up betraying a lack of confidence in the work or process. In the end writer, dancer, actor, whatever - these titles come from their impact. There will be a differ…

Ironically, the story can be read as gesturing in that direction, as it's ostensibly about giving a new title to a particular job. In general, though, I think part of the mistake people keep making is that they try to imitate what would be value to engage with if a human wrote it, in an attempt to claim the role of an author of a book or whatever. There's likely artforms that are unique to what an LLM can facilitate,…

Yes. In the end what mattered truly was the expression.

However - since we are humans - we also care about the artist.

Creating something without the effort previous works involved, can and do affect the context and understanding of it.

Hah - just thought of one good example: how would people feel about talking to only fans creators, if they didn’t know it was AI.
