Definitely not my favorite episode, but I got a kick out of the similarities to A Canticle for Leibowitz during one of the segments in it.
That was a very conscious and deliberate homage.
Where is your source for that? Would love to read anything and everything BTS on B5.

Didn’t B5 do it first, by years? Kira/Odo didn’t become an item until B5 was off the air.

Didn't rewatch it for decades. But isn't this romance a very background narrative arc until the very latest season?
It ruined it for me. I just can't care about two creatures who wouldn't care about each other in a biological sense irl kiss on tv.

You can still see the CRTs behind LCARS, but I have to admit it is pretty cool in general. They had a bigger budget. But for space scenes, IMO the later episodes of B5 were amazing and beautiful. They just need a modern render and to turn down the saturation. TNG era ships and camera framing were much more boring, partly due to the smaller story.
I'm gonna give it a shot. And by give it a shot I mean watch all 5 seasons lol. But I still think TNG just looks better. I get that the space scenes were less epic and the scenes are less dynamic. That restriction enabled effects that were more grounded in fidelity so it holds up with the CG of today. I do know they used CRTs in TNG but not often. Ok, keep in mind the first season of B5 the lighting of ships is very bright and doesn’t look very good. But S2 with the new captain I think they default to nighttime and it looks better as well.

The costuming and sets and CGI are impressive, but the lighting is unnecessarily murky and the dark industrial tunnels aesthetic makes me think of Red Dwarf , which I can’t imagine was a very lavish production.
The earlier Red Dwarf episodes were filmed in the BBC cafeteria and other similar locations. The difference is that Red Dwarf was supposed to look grimy. They were on a mining ship with few luxuries. Red Dwarf was more in the territory of Dark Star, and played into that. (Early Red Dwarf tended to use physical models and costumes for a lot of effects. CGI has never been especially great on RD.) I think B5 has a variety of environments, and some of them are quite nice, and I like the moody bustling alien cantina type spaces. But they also have too many dark industrial passages, which doesn’t always fit the scenes and come off rather cheap.

Do we really need to upscale everything? I don't think image quality really is an important thing to enjoy old movies / series as long as the story is good.
If you watch the popular streaming services on a Linux PC then you'll be lucky to get more than 720p and some only seem to provide SD anyway - even for content from the HD era. This despite obviously having access to more detailed versions that they'll serve you for the same money if you watch on one of their preferred platforms. I am using a projector. Definitely not as sharp as a 4K and higher TV but it makes for a huge screen since I am covering almost all the wall. I find the result smooth and enjoyable regardless of the input resolution.
In other words, immersion seems to be more important than precision/resolution.
