How's your light environment/sunlight exposure? What's your waking body temperature (under arm for 10 minutes)? Have you had a thyroid panel done? (TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3)

I’m in Toronto, so sun exposure is only improving now. We did Mexico in March, and Miami last week, and both were _amazing_ for mood and health.

I’ve never measured body temperature. I’ll check tomorrow.

Blood work in February came back fine for everything, including thyroid, except lipids and slightly elevated alanine aminotransferase.

In terms of where carbs fit in, you're eating 200g of protein a day, which at a guess is 2x to 4x your lean body mass in kg. I'm not saying that it's wrong, it's probably very effective, but the average diet probably swaps that (historically very expensive) protein out for (historically very cheap) bread and rice.

Which we now know is suboptimal. Humans need more protein than we’ve been eating on the SAD. This is especially true as you age and you start losing muscle mass.

I aim for 1g per lbs of weight. There’s so many numbers out there for what’s the right amount, based on lean mass vs total mass, so I figure my number is close enough.

Nice. Mexico and Miami are great for the sun. Catch at least 20m at sunrise and sunset (sunrise is most important). Also midday sun for as much as you can tolerate without burning and your schedule allows. As much skin exposed as possible and never with sunglasses.

Your waking body temperature should be around >= 97.8 and raise to 98.6 or higher by midday. Low waking body temperature can be indicative of low thyroid function even with normal labs.

TSH range is too high, you want it under 2. T4 is converted to either T3 or rT3. You want the majority going to T3. So if you have low normal T3 and high normal rT3, your thyroid is not working well. Low T4 means less to convert to T3.

The only reliable way to lose weight is through a caloric deficit. And the only reliable way to be on a caloric deficit is through counting your calories. If you're dieting without actually counting your calories, then at best you are only hoping and guessing that your diet is sufficient enough to put you in a caloric deficit.

You don't have to count calories to eat in a caloric deficit. Counting is not the only reliable way to hit a deficit. Tons and tons of people on GLP-1 drugs are not counting calories but are in a deficit.

I'd argue that taking a drug to suppress your appetite is way more extreme and unhealthy than simply counting calories, but I guess to each their own. And yes even in that case you're still guessing and hoping you're in a caloric deficit because different foods will satiate your hunger for different caloric cost. If you're not counting calories you could be cutting calories too aggressively or not aggressively enough, or you might not be getting required macronutrient intake with your given diet.

So you can't run away from a bad diet... Except when you can, but that is "obviously not who we are talking about" . Maybe that meme needs to die for good, instead.

So you really think the people being told "you can't outrun a bad diet" would be served by knowing if they adopted the lifestyle of an olympian they would lose weight? a narrow fixation on edge cases while ignoring the (correct) larger point is weird

Tell that to all the skinny endurance weekend warriors who fuel their exercise with huge amounts of sugary drinks and gummy bears. If you are curious, read about the function of GLUT4 in the membrane of skeletal muscles. Reality is more complex than memetic one-liners.

I will as soon as I see any of them gobble up a smothered burrito or Chicago pizza on their run. Do we really want to compare ultramarathon runners with couch potatoes?

i believe pineapple pizza is a favorite and they'll eat the whole damn thing.

This, too, can be monitored without calorie counting (e.g., periodic scale measurements will tell you this).

It seems fasting causes Adipocyte apoptosis. It makes sense, there is cell death. I lost 100 lbs fasting over 1.5 years. I did gain some weight back after stopping, but not much. Strangely, where I saw fat return was not where most of it came off.

But it is basic physics, which is in fact being violated. It's really very normal to require exceptional proof for this. Like literally any scientific study, not just an anecdote claiming magic.

Basic physics says CI/CO applies to a closed system. Show me a closed system human and then it will be applicable. E=MC^2 is basic physics too. So eat a pea and have enough calories for the rest of your life and then some?

You are implying that humans receive energy from another source, which is an extraordinary claim that you should motivate somehow.

Wrong. My claim is that the only reliable way for weight loss is through calorie counting. You can guestimate it without counting calories but that is not reliable. You can't rely on taking a drug indefinitely for weight loss.
