Firefox has not removed support for ftp. I just browsed to ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/ in Firefox 68 just before submitting this comment. Mozilla stopped running ftp://ftp.mozilla.org quite a while ago. Maybe that is what you were remembering?

Genuinely curious. Why do you think a bitstream from an FTP server is faster than from a HTTP server?
Whole solution and experience is different, even if some point uploading file by bytes over TCP is similar. HTTP server itself isn't solution. You need code implementing upload functionality, probably support for uploading many files at once and tracking progress. Now you client uses javascript and that client is remote, you need to "download" it from HTTP server. FTP client is small, local and don't have much overhe…
That’s all well and good, and has nothing to do with Chromium keeping ftp support.

Windows comes with an ftp client? Not that I know of. Unless you mean MS Edge? Oh or I guess there's a command line one. It's not integrated into Windows Explorer, though.
Windows Explorer can navigate (and transfer files) on FTPs. Type "ftp://ip.addr.of.ftp" in explorer and you're in. :-)

Incredible how that happened. I used Google Reader a lot, adding any interesting blogs I would find. Now I can't find any of them again :/ I think I've got a list saved somewhere, but it was just so easy to go through Reader.
I recommend https://bazqux.com/ -- The death of Reader sprung the life of many pre-existing RSS reader replacements.
Where was this when Reader died! Looks great.
The big problem at the time was there was no good options, even a year or so after and I gave up trying. Everything was 90% of the way or too fancy for such a simple service.

No one really uses FTP to transmit anything secret or confidential. Most of the time the password to that FTP server is just "guest" and the same file can also be retrieved by HTTP without authentication.
That is inaccurate, banks heavily use ftp. Probably not a world that many here are exposed to, but it's very normal in the financial space
As is staying on IE6 for ten years longer than decency allows for.

I just hope this isn't like how Google basically killed off RSS when they killed off the best client that everyone was using (which I've still never heard a good reason why) which I believe played a role in the decline of everyone having a blog. And yes I know there's some niche support still, just as FTP will live on.
RSS is still alive and well. Podcasting depends on it.
Funny, I use RSS constantly for podcasts and I never made that connection. Good call.

I found it in one of the many HN threads where alternatives were being advertised left and right just as Reader's death was being announced ;) theoldreader is another one I remember from back then.
