Even worse are phone chargers, intended to be used next to your bed, that light up like a Christmas tree when running. Black electrical tape is great for the worst of it, but you still need a few things available to tell you the operational status, if only they'd dim them a bit.

And do you need a full-on enterprise-grade server? Given the choice between a 1U server whose fans even at minimal utilisation can still be heard three doors away and something with a low-power/laptop-grade CPU that does the same job silently and with little power use, I'll take the latter.

AI is exactly the reason why I would like to build a high end PC. I'm interested in this technology but I don't want to have anything to do with AI subscriptions and big tech in general.

Reminds me of when I as a kid got one of those Delta 7000rpm fan powered cpu coolers, my mom promptly asked what it would cost to make that noise (that was heard in the entire apartment) go away. Got a Zalman (back when they were great) and everything was good. It was a learning experience, and I think everyone should experience that kind of industrial noise at least once to appreciate how quiet consumer hardware is.

I remember a review from back then which contained the phrase "strap on the 7000rpm from hell". Those Delta's definitely weren't quiet.

Buying whole 2020 era PCs here for around $200 mark. As long as you don't need crazy CPU or GPU grunt, which is most people, they are almost indistinguishable from a new one. Windows 10 LTSC + Firefox + uBlock Origin on an i5-9400 feels faster than my M4 Pro MBP. Probably same or better on Linux.

Let's just take a moment to appreciate how important uBlock is for performance. I pity the fools without.

I can't wait for this to happen. I live far enough from the US to not be super affected by this crash and hopefully I will be able to stock up on disks and parts once the prices drop.

In the digital age corporations can and do confiscate things we thought we owned. Amazon removing paid-for kindle books, devices getting bricked, paying a recurring fee to use some features in your car.

Every year, the government comes around, reassesses my house value (always up, never down) and ask me to pay a percentage (always increasing) or they will take away my house which shelters my kids and family.

So, no, I am not too worried about Amazon removing my $9.99 book.

Yeah I can and I do run Firefox on the M4 Pro. It's almost indistinguishable on most tasks when there's an ad blocker running surprisingly.
