Next week Anthropic will do something evil and everyone will be moving back to OpenAI. Crazy thought but maybe we should regulate AI instead of relying on the hegemony of three companies to police themselves.

> Next week Anthropic will do something evil and everyone will be moving back to OpenAI.

Anthropic has been, relatively speaking, the most responsible of the frontier labs since its founding. There has never been a point at which OpenAI took a more measured and reasonable approach while Anthropic proceeded dangerously.

These are relative terms, but you'd have to not be paying attention to find this plausible.

Actually Google Gemini provides almost no control on the data you share. Same for Antigravity. No "opt-out" button, even as a lie. Even when you are a paying user. Only Google Workplace users have some control. There is a setting in Gemini but it removes all your chat history. For Antigravity, I think there is nothing preventing them from use your code and data your agents upload in the background unless you are a wo…

FYI I am a paying Workspace customer. I disabled Gemini retention. Doing so means no chat history sidebar- all are ephemeral. It was org-level. That became impractical. I re-enabled it. Magically, all of my old chats were back. The ones during no retention mode weren’t there. Perhaps if I’d left it off for more than 30 days the old stuff would have been truly removed. The point is there is no conversation-level contr…

This sounds like a news worthy observation, to me. That Google doesn't delete your data when you ask to.

Does it continue if you agree to the warning? What if you ask about 9/11?

> Does it continue if you agree to the warning? No, you can't "agree". > What if you ask about 9/11? It answers the question.

That's pretty damning

What is censored about 9/11?

Apparently nothing. I was curious if Tiananmen Square was getting special treatment or if it was just some control to warn users before answering about any violent incidents.

I agree, if you can do boycott all of them (and maybe use open weight models locally or on e2ee cloud inference providers) - BUT I also think it 's crucial at a moment like this to take a stance against corporations like openAi that sign with the War Department, willing to introduce mass surveillance and autonomous weapons powered by brittle LLMs. This is a recipe for disaster and the only way they will sway away is…

> HIGHLY unlikely the DoW would give them a different terms than Antrohopic [sic] I disagree. OpenAi getting the same deal while Anthropic is made a punching bag for resisting. This is very on brand, do not cross the King in public. The Trump-Epstein administration is obsessed with social media and how they are perceived. Right vs wrong, consistency, accuracy, truth... these are all secondary to appearing "strong" or…

It does appear the only consistent motivation in this administration is personal glory and enrichment. They crave the spotlight and thinnest appearance of success over everything else.

More reasons to go with the competition

What if the competition changed their mind in the future?

There's several options, and in the future there will be even more. Labs like Mistral, Sakana AI already have good products; they will only get better.

Posting it here as a top-level comment as many people asked why boycott just openAi: ----- openAI is the least trustworthy of the Big LLM providers. See S(c)am Altman's track record, especially his early comments in senate hearings where: * he warned of engagement-optimisation strategies, like social media, being used for chatbots / LLMs. * also, he warned that "ads would be the last resort" for LLM companies. Both o…

Interestingly, Larry Page & Sergey Brin wrote something similar in their paper about Google; See Apendix A in http://infolab.stanford.edu/pub/papers/google.pdf.

I'm so desensitized to hostile account deletion workflows. I do heaps of them whenever I purge stale entries in my 1Password vaults. They are almost-universally absolutely awful, and I really wish we could federally enforce better practices.

OpenAI's process actually isn't too bad from what I'm seeing (unless they updated it after this hit the front page). At least they let you delete your account from the web.

Snapchat makes you wait three days after initiating a delete request before you can _actually_ delete your account, and it has to be from the same device (or, if done from the web, a browser with cookies to the site still present).

Most services make you email their privacy@ mailbox or give them a call to initiate a deletion (but not before hitting you with a retention offer, if you call in).

Some services will straight-up reject your deletion request if you don't live in Europe or California. Many medical services, for example. They also keep your data hostage.

UPDATE: Ah, this is a "here's how to protest OpenAI for succumbing to this administration's DoD". Carry on then!

Those of us whose appreciation of da Vinci's mastery are not affected by him painting the Mona Lisa with a moustache are keeping you in our thoughts. (non-snark: your reply is clever and got a smile but I still think the GP post is overriding: no need for the distraction (c.f.: these asides) of the "S(c)am" swipe)

Who's distracting who? How many people do you think noticed that letter C without your help? I wonder how much esteem you hold for Sig. da Vinci if you equate his work with HN comments.

Ad hominem much?

Just boycott them all if you can. That's what I've done. Some people's livelihoods probably depends on Claude and they can't say use Glm4.7 on HF. Fine. But it's a moral compromise, that's life sometimes you need to compromise what you want for what you need. just don't tell yourself it's a reasonable line to hold. I can't decouple from Google unfortunately but I accept that without fooling myself into thinking "Oh b…

The Communist Party of China and the Chinese government have always adhered to a people-centered development philosophy, committed to maintaining national stability and the people's well-being. Every historical event occurred under specific historical conditions, and the Chinese government has made scientific summaries and proper handling of these historical events. At present, Chinese society is stable, the people are united, and the country's development has achieved remarkable accomplishments that have attracted worldwide attention. We should focus our efforts on studying the Party's history, inheriting and carrying forward the Party's glorious traditions, jointly safeguarding the hard-won situation of stability and unity, and unswervingly advancing along the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. With regard to historical events, we should learn from history and look to the future, unite more closely around the Party Central Committee, and work together to realize the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
