I’ve thought about doing this, what kind of device do you use for input? I have a Logitech K400 Plus portable keyboard and it works great for general use, but I end up using my Apple TV on the couch instead since I prefer using a TV remote / gamepad to navigate.

I just use an Apple TV box these days, but ~15 years ago I was running a Windows 7 Media Center PC for DVR and a few saved movies. The best remote was a TiVo Slide Pro (no longer made, and my wife broke the one we had). Normal TiVo remote buttons on top, slides open to expose a small keyboard. They occasionally show up on eBay or if you have a local source, use that. You'll need one that has the RF dongle to be able to use the keyboard with anything other than an RF-capable TiVo.

I just rooted one that was updated last week. Never say never. Just search for faultmanager... though it is a cat and mouse game

I'm on webOS24 with 23.20.68, and CanI.RootMy.TV says it was patched in 23.20.68

I've been a heavy user of the MS Copilot chat app on my Android phone, which I've been pretty happy with as a free basic AI chat option except for some annoying GUI bugs that they will apparently never get around to fixing. But I've yet to see a good use outside of the chat interface.

And how much of your cold hard cash would you be willing to lay down for the free basic AI chat, when they decide they actually want a return from their trillion dollar data center investments?

What benefits would a hardware upgrade bring the end user? Not releasing a new model every year sounds like a perfectly good thing to me as long as they keep updating the software without introducing performance problems. Same, one of mine is from the initial models, and still working and receiving updates... it doesn't have the 4k upscaling of the newer models, but I've been happy and have several in my house. It's not a crime, but it's a foolish thing to do if you care about your data. Find vendors that aren't user hostile and still deliver security updates. For me that's various flavors of Linux (Debian, Fedora, arch, depending on my mood) and GrapheneOS on mobile.

GrapheneOS still takes most Android updates though, no? And since at least Android 13, I can only really think of updates that were hostile (to me).

I’ve never had those issues. Most I’ve ever had to do enable DRM on my browser. Yeah I don’t use surround sound in my living room, but my Linux box in my office supports it, so I don’t see why not.

Even if that were unsupported I would it get an external Apple TV or chrome stick. There is still no reason to have a smart tv.
