Having an “aged battery” is very different from having a battery that was suddenly ruined by a buggy update that can’t be rolled back though.
This wasn't a buggy update. It was announced ahead of time via email, including compensation options.

HN headline is misleading - it reduces battery life for some 4a users, not all 4a users, and anybody that is affected (and they have a procedure to verify whether you're affected) can get a free battery replacement, fixing the problem, or alternatively, cash.

No, it’s not “the same thing”. Apple throttled the phones because the alternative was the phone shutting off. It wasn’t a software bug. It’s physics that when a battery got old and you tried to run the phone at full speed, the battery couldn’t handle it.
TBH I think what Google did here is also bad, this should definitely trigger a system popup with an opt in/out.
However, Apple did exactly the same thing, initially denied it, and people are still defending them years later.

No, it’s not “the same thing”. Apple throttled the phones because the alternative was the phone shutting off. It wasn’t a software bug. It’s physics that when a battery got old and you tried to run the phone at full speed, the battery couldn’t handle it.
Why? Because we have a counterfactual observation: in France there's a law against "planned obsolescence" and to comply Apple never pushed their update here. And not only French IPhone kept working, but everybody could disable the speed nerf by switching their location to France on their phone. And it turns out that the phones handled it without issue.

I'd recommend going with Sony nowadays. The Xperia 10 series especially is a lot like a 4a.
Sony are giving up on the compact flagship 5 series because "People are no longer interested in compact phones and would rather go for a large one if it offers the same benefits". And unfortunately the specs of the Xperia 10 just doesn't cut it for me. :(
Buying my last phone was a real challenge - even 6.5 inches long feels huge, and there were very few options under 7 inches.

Apple also has an advertising company. And they track you, but they get money by selling you stuff mostly. I’m deep into the Apple ecosystem system and they don’t force updates, try to upsell me every time updates are installed. I have no ads on the apps I use. They are quite happy for you to fork over gobs of money and call it a day. Googles primary source of income is ads. All this stuff they do is the primary way…
