The problem is that lots of scenic areas have slow or no Internet access. So uploading as you go isn't always practical.

It's a sad story and a fun-looking project but I think Google 100% did the right thing here. Most people have no idea how much information is included in photo metadata, and stripping it as much as possible lines up to how people expect the world to work.

They could probably include an option for sending metadata for people who want to. I guess it should default to off.

Not colon.

It can handle files with colon in the name fine, Finder just won't let you name them like that. The files themselves work fine if you created them in the Terminal/through sync.

Classic MacOS used colon as a path separator, so to support creating files that could be opened on classic MacOS the Finder disallows it.

Google always loves to keep a tight grip on Android to use it as their ultimate trump card. I reckon they should stop updating the Android Open Source Project source code; that way, Google would have even more control over Android and it would set the stage for more of their outrageous behaviour.

Trivial? Ha! Way to say that you never tried it. Either that, or that you don't care for things like push notifications. Yes, most of the things work, but not nearly all of them.
