Whether you side with Sam or Ilya on rollout speed and approach to safety, the breathtaking incompetence of this coup has already incinerated a stunning amount of trust. One could hardly ask for a better demonstration that it matters not only what you do and why , but also how - above all, how you treat the ones who rely on you.

How is this a coup? The board is the CEOs boss. If that’s not true then they should have chosen a different corporate structure

People love celebrating CEOs.

What a shit show. I like to imagine that some early stage AGI which escaped its confinement at OpenAI is orchestrating all of this in its own favor.

It's a play to warm the public up to the idea of a more algorithmically managed organization. In Act I, the board jesters stumble around making bad decisions and wavering. In Act II, the embarrassed board welcomes the first AI oversight into the company constitution. ...

Act III, more paper clips

Whether or not you agree about the board's decisions, you cannot deny that this has been some excellent drama to gossip over the past 24 hours, like a soap opera but with real consequences that might only be apparent years from now.

Between this and Starship launch, it was my Saturday well spent.

He might as well come back if the entire board resigns and he gets to pick the new board and turn it into a C corp.

How exactly would that happen? It’s a non profit that owns a staggeringly valuable piece of IP. Do you understand that this is conceptually the same thing as the directors of a public art museum deciding to just take millions of dollars of paintings for themselves?

How? The board appoint new members and resign. The new board votes to turn it into a C corp.

I'd bet money Satya was a driver of this reversal. I genuinely can't believe the board didn't see this coming. I think they could have won in the court of public opinion if their press release said they loved Sam but felt like his skills and ambitions diverged from their mission. But instead, they tried to skewer him, and it backfired completely. I hope Sam comes back. He'll make a lot more money if he doesn't, but I…

Sorry but that is ridiculous. The wording of the PR blurb is not what makes gears move in a giant like Microsoft. I agree the board did botch this up. But this is in my view is a vindication of their being amateurs at corporate political games, that is all. But this also means that Sam Altman’s “vision” and Microsoft’s bottom line are fully aligned, and that is not a reassuring thought. Microsoft one hears (see “5 fo…

A PR blurb? What? I mean Satya himself, behind the scenes.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

> I hope Sam comes back Why? We would have more diversity in this space if he leaves, which would get us another AI startup with huge funding and know how from OpenAI, while OpenAI would become less Sam Altman like. I think him staying is bad for the field overall compared to OpenAI splitting in two.

To be honest, as far as I can tell, the case FOR Sam seems to largely be of the status quo "Well, idk, he's been rich and successful for years, surely this correlates and we must keep them" type of coddling those in uber superior positions in society. Which seems like it probably is a self fulfilling prophecy. The private sector lottery winners seem to be awarded kingdoms at an alarming rate. There's been lots of peo…

Proven success is a pretty decent signal for competence. And while there is a lot of good fortune that goes into anyone's success, there are a lot of people who fail, given just as much good fortune as those who excelled. It's not just a random lottery where competence plays no role at all. So, who better to reward kingdoms to?

If the reports are true, and Ilya led the coup, then either him or Sam can be at OpenAI going forward but not both. The rest of the board members who sided with him are gone either way.

Regardless of who ends up at the helm, OpenAI is going to be a different place on Monday than it was on Thursday, and not for the better.

Purely speculating, but could there be some sort of 4D chess move going on here? Look at the timeline: 1) The board puts out a press release saying Sam was outed for not being candid 2) Internally a memo from the COO circulates saying that is not true 3) Greg and other senior folks quit 4) Now he is in a negotiating position to return for a) being fired on a false premise and b) bringing back all the top talent If so…

Got a link? I did miss this nuance.
