Upsetting about the app, but the new iOS weather app has the functionality essentially. The real gut wrencher is the darksky website going down. It’s how I check weather most of the time a no other browser weather site comes close to it in simplicity and features.
I've used the weather.gov site for the last ~5 years, and it has been great. I bookmark both the 7-day local forecast[1] and the hourly dashboard[2]. [1] https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=40.71234500000... [2] https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?w0=t&w3u=1&w5=pop&...

More than a decade ago, I blamed the victims. I still do, in a way. When you build on top of someone else's platform, you are engaged in digital sharecropping. The platform owner acts like they own your customers, and you are tilling the landlord's fields in exchange for 70% of what you can earn selling your app. You may think the landlord is taking an outrageous cut of "your" sales, but the landlord thinks they own…
Has anyone who is doing arm chair legal analysis on HN actually been following the entire thing where Apple announced support for Android for WeatherKit? https://www.androidpolice.com/dark-sky-api-android-weatherki...

#313My $500 backpacking satellite communicator, manufactured by a 17B company, uses the Dark Sky api to get weather forecasts. They've got a hilarious FAQ saying basically "Apple won't talk to us either, but we hope they don't shut it down soon". Sadly exactly what I've come to expect from any software written by Garmin. It's all incredibly half-assed compared to their hardware and actual satellite/gps algorithms.
They can use Apple's WeatherKit REST API which is the replacement for the Dark Sky API. Garmin really doesn't seem to understand that in this day and age they are supposed to be a software company as much as they are a hardware company.
