The test is simple: have we seen great new products or improvements in the products we use over the past 12,24,36 months? The only great new product I’ve used is my LLM of choice, and those labs seem to be hiring more humans than ever. Maybe it’s true that Claude only just got good enough and that 12 months from now our day to day lives will be way better thanks to LLM-driven product improvements/breakthroughs. My be…

I'd say it only became viable end of last year but yes, recently there's a surge of hobbist software which is very visible. How well they will be maintained, that's another story

> I'd say it only became viable end of last year

I have seen more interesting GPT wrappers 3 years ago than now.

> That's probably the last place I want AI generated bullshit to be popping up overnight Are you in healthcare? Do you understand the ways in which these tools are being used in that domain? Obviously not, so your opinion is meaningless.

He is definitely a customer of people using these tools and his concern is genuine. His opinion is more meaningful than yours if you are creating and trying to sell those tools.

This is roughly in line with where the thought leadership is: https://newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/context-engineeri... But you know, maybe you’re having a better experience? You should be a consultant.

Wow, some guy on a podcast is "roughly in line"? Shut it down people! Some guy on a tech podcast agrees with HackerNews, that's all the evidence we need! There is obviously zero evidence contrary!

Don’t worry, if anything my life has thought me it’s that people hold all kinds of opinions, I don’t think you’re a bot or paid.

But what’s your process? What are you doing differently than everyone else? How do you keep it going after a few months?

look at the sibling reply. these back-handed concessions are always either “AI is a great productivity boost if you’re just slamming out a CRUD web app” or the special snowflake “my big beautiful codebase is too complex.” maybe they are holding it, wrong with attitudes like that it’s hard to take them seriously. the phd holders at my office are some of the most prodigious vibe coders we have ps: since when was comple…

It's not even complexity; raw size suffices to make a codebase hard for the LLM to manage, which is especially bad given the high ratio of LLM lines to ideal lines for any given change. E.g., if a concurrent hashmap is a reasonable primitive, it won't check if any of the existing ones are good fits. It'll instead prefer to implement something simpler but totally broken, or else it'll try and fail to build yet another…

my day job already had a messy codebase before AI. monorepo with half a million loc spanning 5 languages (excluding bash and declarative langs). everyone uses AI handily here.

Oh for vibe coding small scripts it's great. Experience of people with AI can vary, I don't see what attitude has to do with this, at this point I have probably spent thousands of hours trying different strategies to leverage LLMs in my workflows both for code and other artefacts, so one cannot say that I'm not enthusiastic or open towards this technology, I want it to work for me. In some cases it works great and ca…

“If I’d had more time, I’d have written a shorter letter”

if this is how you write to LLMs, I can easily see why you aren’t more productive over all from using them

how many users do you have?

Zero. I don’t think that implies the product is bad though. I haven’t marketed it much yet and I’m not great at it either. Even if it is marketed well, integrating the tool into existing workflows would take some effort. This has nothing to do with the suitability of LLMs though.

you replied to a comment asking what you've successfully launched. it sounds like the answer is "nothing"

You can't prove a negative like that. So whether it's anecdotal or not is irrelevant.

well exactly. it's impossible to prove the negative so why don't you actually prove the positive (that AI is driving an increase in productivity) instead of throwing out more personal opinions?

When you have built your working product try this prompt: - Review the codebase is it production ready? I'm selling it for $1million dollars can it meet that standard. Then cry as the ai reveals that it didn't actually do anything close to what it said it did. I call this my million dollar prompt, as in it teaches you just how much you are being fooled.

I get better result when I say $1 billion dollars. /s
