I don't have the app and I use reddit (although not often) via my mobile browser (firefox) and it never forced me to download the app, as far as I recall.

Old reddit still works, images and videos are usually forced to go to new reddit. You can sometimes get around it by clicking on the comments link. I started getting a blocking overlay telling me to download the app on new reddit and I just leave.

By default it sends you to new ("www"), but I've found (at least on non-mobile) I can edit the URL to use "old" and works (at least for now).

I am currently designing my house in Blender and was planning to import it into Unreal Engine to make it navigable. HN has a way of serving me the content I’m looking for at the right time…

My partner is an architect, and is really good with Unreal for this exact purpose. There's something magical, for a client, about being able to literally walk around the site rendered at Unreal-level fidelity, even if it's not VR.

For those that don’t know, the Hamptons are full of very nice places. The uber-rich have second homes, there, that are bigger than Gold Coast first homes. This company probably makes a lot of money, but they also have serious competition, so they need things like the 3D walkthroughs. Summer traffic in the Hamptons is a nightmare, though. Many uber-rich have helipads.

These apps already exist in VR. There's even a few of them on the Meta Quest line of headsets which are also standalone. The issue is that most people, who are older than Gen Alpha, flat out refuse to use VR for various reasons so they're not going to be aware of any of this. It's just dismissed.

I think you deeply underestimate the value of good advertising and the charisma of the ones doing it - especially when they're sharing their story more than trying to sell you something.

I think you missed the fact that not even Apple could change the mindset of adults regarding VR.

I am referencing trends and past data, while you’re talking about an anecdote.

This is wonderful and amazing, but isn't there a risk to over promise? Reality can never be as perfect as a 3D rendering...?

But reality is never as perfect as the design. It seems to me that being able to "stand" in a rendering and look around is going to put you much closer to reality than looking at blueprints and a front elevation. So i don't think the question is "could VR and the end product be different" it is "is VR closer to the end product than other options" and I think the answer is likely, yes.

I love hearing statements like this. I want to learn how to import into Unreal Engine... also throw a rocket launcher in there with some destruction physics. I will caution tho, converting the Rhino models back into CAD for construction drawings, etc. is time consuming. One of my architects is skilled in Revit, but we haven't explored the real time rendering / 3d visualization abilities enough with it.

Money? It's hard to stop getting revenue suddenly for an undetermined time. Especially with a family behind.

That's to my opinion very simplistic very often not true and dependent on the job market (which isn't that great right now!)
