AI only got big, especially for coding, because they were able to train on a massive corpus of open source code. I don't think it is a coincidence.
Another funny possibly sad coincidence is that the licenses that made open source what it is will probably be absolutely useless going forward, because as recent precedent has shown, companies can train on what they have legally gained access to. On the other hand, AGPL continues to be the future of F/OSS.

A company's mission is not an individual's mission. I personally would never hire an engineer whose main pursuit is money or promotions. These are the laziest engineers that exist and are always a liability.

It's money. It's also a fresh, small org and a new project, which is exciting for variety of reasons.
I can't explain why but I don't think money is it. Nor a new project or whatever can't be it either. Its just too small of a value proposition when you are already in openAI making banger models used by the world.

Google was bad the moment it chose its business model. See The Age of Surveillance Capitalism for details.
