I always have to look up if it was Socrates or Plato who got sentenced to death for simultaneously being an atheist and worshiping new gods his city didn't recognise. Point is, you may not like it, but merely being cancelled rather than straight up executed is why we live in the good times. (And whatever the merits and demerits of unrestricted free speech, a machine that isn't deemed capable of personhood shouldn't g…

From an AI getting kicked from a public forum for an uncouth joke to the gulag in what, a handful of comments?

I think that's quite a bit of a leap my friend.

As many people here noticed, the bit has actually nothing to do with transphobia, or gay, but it's about a comedian bombing a show with horrible jokes. What's interesting in this case, is that there can be no "background check". Or "this guy has actually had weird quotes in the past, he's very suspicious". Or "he has republican friends"... All the regular strategy activist use to demolish a public figure over a prete…

> This time it's just pure AI, and as such pure stupidity from the censor. The developer confirmed that inappropriate content was generated when they switched language models, so the moderation process worked fine.

I think the point being made is that jokes don't imply hatred per se.

If I say "Spanish people are lazy fucks" that sounds offensive and might be considered racist, but I myself am Spanish and that context changes its meaning. We generally strive away from racist jokes because as a society we are concerned that we are furthering racist ideologies otherwise.

For a more explicit example, if a person says "I'm tired of them fucking n-words" it matters a great deal, socially, if that person is black or white. But this is an AI. It has biases, sure, but no past experience and no beliefs. If an AI says that same phrase, what is the meaning behind that?

More succinctly, can an AI say the n-word? Why?

It's weird to talk about missing an element of human empathy regarding the topic of trans individuals, whose very existence is unacceptable to a broad swath of the population. 40% of transgender people have attempted suicide. The public dialogue around trans lives is one of very little empathy, respect, or civility. People are on this thread casually debating whether this joke "went to far" or not, while the people w…

Most of humanity's best art, literature, music, and comedy is about people experiencing trauma. Being able to joke amidst suffering is the very thing that makes us human. It's also a critical part of empathy itself.

These are jokes at the expense of people widely discriminated against (and in many parts of the world, outright killed). It's not funny if you're punching down on minorities. It's just fucking sad.

I can't find any details (at least in TFA), what exactly was this joke? I would not trust a private company's judgement on what is "offensive", given the innumerable instances of them proving incapable of accurate judgement of such a thing using automated systems.

What is this going to accomplish? Is the robot going to learn from its mistakes? Or is this supposed to be against the programmers for "failing to put in safeguards" or something like that? It's kind of silly - it's not that the robot was bad but that if you keep it on 24/7 it will eventually say something bad. An infinite monkey typewriter will contain transphobic text.

Seems like it could be interesting if the robot could learn from its mistakes, specifically that it would probably learn to be subversive (how to tell jokes that bypass the censors' policies but still communicate the wrongthink) rather than learning to toe the party line.

Everybody seems up in arms about this situation, but I find the whole thing hilarious. After half a decade of AI hype without many uses in the wild, we finally live at a point in history where "AI-generated Jerry Seinfeld makes transphobic joke, gets cancelled" is not an Onion headline.

[flagged]

“Transgender is mental illness”

“All liberals are gay (bad)”

Yes… nobody is offended by this kind of vile hate speech. Right. Maybe it’s just you who thinks that. Not possibly queer and and trans people and their family and friends could take offense.

If you click through to the mirror from the /r/livestreamfail page, the clip actually comes across (to me) as making fun of the people who make those kinds of jokes.

It's here, btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qxcouuH3u0 Pet peeve of mine is when 20 sources report on something without the original material.

Oh is this being studied, the ramifications of AI reflecting and amplifying some of the negatives of humanity back at us? Today’s training sets might not know when something was created, and don’t see attitudes changing. Today’s AI has no concept of things it has seen examples of but should not repeat. Maybe we’ll get AI that will convincingly argue conspiracy theories. AI will never get tired of arguing. What if neural networks become better than people at spreading misinformation?
