On windows 10, holding down the ctrl-button while clicking on the icon will switch to the recently used instance and if you keep clicking it will cycle through the open instances. i thought that too! but firefox has different dns requests going to their servers as well.

On linux you can use IceCat. On windows, download simplewall and block pingsender.exe there. Should get rid of the queries if you combine it with userjs tweaking.
