It is speculation and theory. Many of said same authors have been surprised at how far transformers have taken the general technology. Yes, transformers have inherent limitations and not all LLMs are powered by transformers.
Besides that, many experts don’t want their entire career defined by strictly transformers based LLMs, it’s very reasonable they have “walked out”.
