On the one hand this could be interesting for military and government looking to make sure there are no backdoors in the hardware they are using.

On the other hand, having it public makes exploits more likely since everyone can take a look.

For software this is beneficial, any fixed bug or exploit is then available to everyone and can be easily deployed.

I'm not very familiar with hardware but it seems like it would require new chips to be manufacturered to really fix any issues.

"back-door free" - crucial stuff unless you like having big brother (and his friends) stand behind you each time you look at a screen. Parasitic behavior is (and will be) the new sustainable advantage. Also finding new ways to escape and deflect (or hide from) prosecution. That's why some people have the "love of power" and not the "power of love" - they depend on those that do. They'll vacuum up all your communications and use the best AI on it to one-up you. Tracking and predicting spending patterns is (and will be) more important too. Supermarkets always consolidate their own brands into the most popular external ones. They own the shelf-space and sales process. Why just supermarkets? Why not "AI" companies? Do you like having your finances gang-raped? Make sure you're "back-door free" - it's fascism-free too hopefully.

Everyone can take a look, but not everyone will spend money to produce their own. So this will improve security, not reduce it.

I find it ironic how different the culture is between software and hardware people. This makes me very happy about my decision of going into software

What is ironic about this? I am not trying to be difficult, I just don't understand.

There is definitely a huge gap, where hardware people spend a great deal of time creating and testing things, that they then want to manufacture for long enough to pay it back. It seems like on the (web) software side, people want to try something out (maybe over a weekend), launch it quickly, then shut it down when they figure out it's not going anywhere (the Google approach).

That's how Larry Ellison is one of the richest people in the world? Because nobody ever buys Oracle, except every major bank, and enterprise.

From the same cinematic universe where nobody ever picks Windows, it just magically ends up everywhere through nobody's decision.

I wish HN would look outside their bubble for 3 seconds.

The wafer manufacturing process takes weeks to months after a tape out.

Accelerating this process sounds like a good focus for an SBIR (small business innovation research) RFP.

There are startups trying to reduce the time/cost of chip-fab. Atomic Semi is one. Most of the big players have shuttle services which one can use to put a small chip on for fabrication for not a lot of money ~ $10k for a few chips. Tiny Tapeout acts as an OshPark or JLC PCB for chip design using 2 different fabs - skywater's 130nm and IHP's 130nm node. Wafer.space uses Gobal Foundries 180nm (~ $7 per 20mm^2 chip).

At the end of the day the industry has evolved and optimized to stamp out millions of chips a year with very little defects. However that requires a fairly hefty upfront commitment in design/verification time along with a capital commitment to make enough chips to get economies of scale. This breaks down when trying to build small volumes of chips quickly. It's like trying to turn an oil tanker quickly....
