"I wish AI would advance in other careers than ones that people are passionate about."

So that means? researchers are passionate about their job does that mean that we shouldn't use AI to speed up medical research? material research? so on and so on. It's just someone mad that their job is getting closer to be automated before others.

Well I thought it was gonna be about the hostile deep-fakes but it's about career threat for creatives. I do wish the robots were doing more mundane or labour intensive tasks and leave the art to humans.

What’s the difference. All tasks are mundane and labor intensive, all tasks can be done by artificial beings. We happen to be in a weird little valley right now where some tasks are still impossible for artificial beings to do better than us. This is a very short term aberration. If we are still here in a couple generations, when artificial beings have surpassed our output in every way that matters, then we’ll have a…

> All tasks are mundane and labor intensive

I'd say all tasks when done for money and under pressure (deadlines, people depending on you, etc) become less enjoyable.

I enjoy coding in my free time. Doing it for work - not so much.

Very good discussion there. “I am 68 years old, on the opposite spectrum of life’s journey. At your age, I had the same passion to be a writer. But when personal computers became available just a few years later, that passion changed to becoming a computer programmer. I’ve been doing that ever since. My point is: Don’t lose your passion. Learn everything you can about this new technology and figure out how to use it…

If I were at the opposite spectrum of life's journey, I would be open to life's changes too, knowing that I didn't have much of it left. But I'm in my 30s, which means on average I have another 40-50 years of existence to get through.

I understand - but isn‘t it a mistake to think of it as getting through? Soon it will be over and then merely having gotten through seems like such a waste.

Every time Sam Altman announces some new offering at OpenAI, I get a little more thankful I don't have any children.

Because they may turn out like him?

Because it's going to change the world in drastic ways, and it's very likely that it will be harder, in many ways, for the next generation than it was for us. The kids today will become adults in a world that is mostly foreign to all of us; there won't be precedent to fall back on or wisdom of elders to lean on. They won't recognize this or even mind that this is their reality, as it will just have always been this way for them (and the adults of today will complain about how good things used to be). And the generational cycle will continue.

> artificial beings

Last time I checked it was an algorithm that needs to be run and fed with input to perform calculations. Not a being?

The only thing that is a "being" about it currently is the nature of the beings that "donated" the training data (without being, hem, asked).

It might, or it might not. It might enhance many lives too. Maybe it's just the internet, but sometimes you have to wonder if there is a thriving neo-luddite community out there.

That puppies-playing-in-the-snow nightmare video isn't enhancing anybody's life

I'm not a fan of this sort of takes. History has shown time and time again that pretty much any technological innovation is a net good, despite the protests of the luddites. Progressive creatives see this type of tech as a tool to simplify and re-adapt their process. The post author is 16, and an aspiring animator. If their attitude is to be scared of tech, instead of being insanely curious about it, they are not on…

Steam and combustion engines might be a net good for humanity, but weren’t good for millions of species in the current mass extinction. I think it’s a similar worry that AI will only be a good for the very top of the food chain.

A child's life is valuable each moment. There's no guarantee of security and safety for any human anywhere at any time. We can't just be paralyzed by possible negative outcomes, life requires taking risks. (You might not want kids for some other reason, like free time, don't like kids, etc, but if you would otherwise have kids except for the dangers in the world, I'd say rethink your risk tolerance)

Possible negative outcomes seem to be becoming more and more possible. And no one cares so long as the number at the bottom of the piece of paper hits the target that was made 90 days prior.

Altman's not the only example - our reluctance to tackle things like gun violence in the US or climate change are others - but he and his ilk are a prominent example.
