I really liked he did that, completely changed the perspective on the comments. I never click on links.

Even if he did not improve as much as he did our discussion, did you have to be so mean. It's Christmas, let him have it.

I tried that last week, and for me the dealbreaker was the touchpad... It may not really important for other people but not being able to use the f keys directly on the laptop is annoying....

Do you mean the touchbar? Yeah that’s a problem. Apparently the touchbar runs a whole instance of iOS. I don’t imagine support is going to be easy.

The touchbar on Intel machines ran bridgeOS. On ARM machines there is no separate SoC and the touchbar is controlled by the main SoC.

You can use DisplayLink to drive external displays. https://www.macworld.com/article/675869/how-to-connect-two-o... With some docks and adapters like https://www.sonnettech.com/product/m1-mac-dual-displayport-a... They’re not completely successful from what I hear, but I know it works for some folks. I have an M1 Max so I haven’t tried myself.

DisplayLink in my experience has horrible performance. Not a good experience and I think that's why Apple avoided it.

The biggest issue is that M1 is undocumented Apple Silicon. It has to be fully reverse engineered, primarily by the Asahi Linux team. Other Linux distros will have to piggyback off the work of Asahi, and I think that generally they're avoiding jumping in yet because the hardware support is not very mature.

Presumably everything from asahi will get merged in to mainline Linux and distros will just work. The end goal of the project is to not require their own distribution/repos.

As much as I love the project, the work is far from done. Any macOS update can change the firmware of the GPU or the display controller, which would break the Asahi driver. And there are going to be a lot of macOS updates for at least the next five years.

I'm just grateful that Apple didn't totally lock down the bootloader on macOS devices, given the knowhow evident on iOS/iPadOS.

They actually went the other way and released some extra features that only serve to make alt OSs easier and do nothing for macOS.

Hoping for a project osx86 to happen again but for ARM releases of Windows no doubt.

Imagine a car, but the trunk is always locked, and possibly also filled with equipment that sends everything the owner does with the car to the manufacturer. The owner can't use the trunk, as the manufacturer has the key. That car is also so easy to drive that everybody and their grandmother uses it.

Meanwhile, real men/women drive sports cars they built themselves from scrap parts.

FYI, cars do transmit all sort of info. Here’s Tesla for example:

I see your account is 1 day old, and your question makes total sense to me too.

So, welcome, glad to have you here of course.

The answer is a commented "tldr" is widely used on news.ycombinator.com, and, as comments below say, it's become a conventional courtesy: people tend to scan comments for tldrs, in order to possibly avoid digressing into commonly (but not always) long winded posts.

Not everyone participates in Christmas. This fact is a manifestation of classical liberalism: religious freedom in particular.
