I would disagree pretty strongly with this. Bitcoin has been aggressively libertarian from the start, and its popularity is due in part to the political arguments made in support of its use ("monetary policy bad," "code is law," etc).
This isn't necessarily of all cryptocurrency, but Bitcoin in particular has always been part of a particular political agenda.
