It's called disinvestment and it's not a new concept. For instance in years past, activists called upon companies to disinvest from apartheid South Africa. Among those activists was a man you may have heard of, Barack Obama.

In their letter they dismiss the notion that the issue is complex and can't be boiled down to the company simply saying "we support X" or "Y is in the right here", but that's exactly what it is. A consumer electronics company cannot be expected to make sense of and take sides in a centuries-long religious and geopolitical conflict.

It's amusing that people never seem to get excited about India and Pakistan's fight over Kashmir (and Apple has employees in India), England and Ireland's fight over Northern Ireland (again, Apple has a presence in Ireland) or other violent land disputes around the world where their company does business. And the civil wars in Sudan (Apple gets some "3TG" materials from there), and civil rights abuses in China.
There are wars and abuse in North Africa, but they could give a rat’s ass because it’s not in their conscience at the moment or the enemy is not a convenient enemy they can despise.

This is a statement from employees of the big corporation (presumably all of whom feel comfortable leaving on a moment's notice) to the corporation. Boycotting any nation is a political statement. Doesn't matter if it was employee pressure or not, it's still political.
When, say, GitHub decides to have their place of business in the US and to subject themselves to US embargoes and therefore bans users in Iran, that's certainly a political statement. But if they say "We were forced to ban users in Iran, because we've decided it's net good for business to be subject to US law and the US does not like Iran," people interpret that as a pretty different political statement from GitHub spontaneously banning users in Iran because they themselves don't like Iran.
