Accessing maps and directions through a web search, though? That hasn't made sense for years on mobile. Sad to say, they need an independent DDG Maps app to make this viable on mobile.

You’re basically nitpicking that they used their logo alone in the header instead of also putting “DDG” there which is petty. If you were actually confused (hard to believe) just reading the content would clarify any confusion. Check out the first line of the article. This thread would have a point if the blog spoke of DDG in the third person, but it doesn’t.
Call it petty or whatever, this thread is obviously about the entire site, which engages in content marketing a lot (check out all the non-"DuckDuckGo News" posts) without the courtesy of a clear domain name, and not about this particular announcement.
As actuator said in the thread, it should be duckduckgo.com/blog/.

#33Does the misleading "spreadprivacy" domain name really do more good than harm? It's fine to market DDG as privacy respecting, but making an astroturf "privacy advice" org is disgusting.
It's a .com and the first thing you see is the duck.

#37FYI, there are also offline and free locally running apps that you can use: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Routing#Mobile_device_so... I used OSMAnd and it works better than Google Maps for my area.
For me osmand works most of the time; I do find myself falling back on other services quite a bit.

#38It's hard to call it "private" in absolute terms when the principle of operation of the service is to send your data to a third party. Sure, it's less un-private than using the data vacuum that is Google, but it's still sharing pieces of your life with a random org.

This statement is a lot less valuable now that your data is sold even when you’re paying for a product (eg a “smart” TV)

So much can be gleaned from the way points. Google guesses home and work with great accuracy without the need for crazy fancy data analysis.
But only because they can tie it to a user account . If DDG is the middleduck acting as an anonymizing layer, Apple won't be able to perform such analysis on the data. This is all conjecture obviously, it's hard to know exactly how much data Apple is getting, and if they could use something else to fingerprint users, but I'll give DDG the benefit of doubt for now.
Correlate navigation requests made through DDG with location data from people with less of a focus on privacy. From there you can use a social graph to narrow down who lives at a given location to a small set of people. It's a lot better than straight up telling a third party which account lives at/uses a certain location, but it's navigation is a very revealing activity no matter what.

So true. I just had my wife and or teenage daughter watch The S Dilemma on netflix just a few hours ago. Chilling even for a techie like me. More people should be encouraged to watch it.
