But you’re not wrong in your opinion and allowing downvotes without requiring a response encourages groupthink as well.
But where’s the line? Do we as society mandate freedom of speech on all private platforms? Are downvotes on HN protected speech?
You’re right that it’s a tough problem. We are at an inflection point right now. The boundaries of speech freedoms for the next century are being defined right now.

This is not coincidental. The same thing happened with Voat, the same thing is happening with Ruqqus.
I'm sure some not-awful stuff will end up as collateral damage here, but Reddit is attempting to target the communities of people that are promoting and engaging in some pretty heinous activities and lines of thought. When those are the people leaving to make a new platform where they won't be censored, that's the content that takes up the mindshare on those websites.

I find the narrative on this one not merely dubious, but Orwellian. Not only is free speech under extraordinary attack, as we have seen, freedom of association is "in the public health interest" but only for the "right" causes.
"White supremacism" -- just like "Russian trolls" -- is a canard used to justify actions which are themselves fascist.

#38I don't understand why you would even publicize this. Just stop counting those users' votes, if that's what you want to do? There's enough fuzz in the vote counts that no one would notice, and you wouldn't have any controversy on your hands.
The point is that the users who are upvoting this kind of content will stay on the site if they think their votes matter. Reddit clearly would rather they leave entirely, and this is a good way to encourage racists/misogynists/incels/whoever to find another platform.

#40My long time reddit account (same name as my hn account) was shadowbanned 2 weeks ago. I sent them an appeal and they responded really quick (it was sunday night I believe) saying that my account "got caught by Reddit's spam filter" and unbanned the account. A few days later my account was banned again. I sent an appeal and this time they haven't responded in over a week. Is this possibly related?
