Why would this be a good thing? Why not leave the docs up to help further educate people, but put a banner on top of the site to show respect like Hacker News does? You can call attention more so by reserving a nice area of at the top of the page and logo while still encouraging people to come and learn. Now people will just go there and leave. I can't see how this would get people to care or care more? Just my opini…

Because educating people on racism and police brutality is far more important than educating someone on a navigation library.

Okay, I expected to see such answers on social media and not on Hacker News. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for your thoughtful answer.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

This actually happened across several months, but much of it did become public within a very short period of time. Breonna Taylor was shot near the end of February, Ahmaud Arbery a few weeks later, and George Floyd was murdered around 2.5 months following that. Unfortunately these sorts of events happen far too often and don't always gain the widespread attention they should in a timely manner.

Without negating either of these two comments I do think it is alarming the degree to which the US corporate media are capricious in their coverage of these types of incidents. As the link I posted claimed, there are currently thousands of 'news' stories about the unfortunate Floyd's demise but little over time of many other similar incidents regardless of race, situation etc. This massive inconsistency leads me to s…

> there are currently thousands of 'news' stories about the unfortunate Floyd's demise but little over time of many other similar incidents regardless of race, situation etc

This seems disingenous and actually a bit insensitive. I'm a white man, but I know white privilege exists. Everytime a black person leaves the home and sees a police officer they get PTSD not because they're guilty but because they think no matter what the cop thinks they already are guilty for something or will try and pin something on them, and it's not some irrational fear, it's seated in decades of them doing JUST that.

Common examples of white privilege include the following phrases:

- White lives matter too

- All lives matter

- "But what about black on black crime"

- Not all white people....

- I'm not privileged, I'm poor

- White people are discriminated against too...

Black lives matter isn't saying only Black lives matter, but that Black lives matter too, as in they're not animals like they're treated by police officers, and if you don't think it happens then you're simply blind or you don't care because you're prejudiced or showing blatant racism.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. What happened to Mr. Floyd is a tragedy. This just comes off poorly though, no matter how well-intentioned. Understood that you want to show the world you care. This just seems small, pointless, and unsubstantial. Why not have a button that solicits donations instead of crippling functionality that somebody expects to be there?

Because crippling functionality that you expect to be there.might get you to actually pay attention.

Why? The vast majority of people don't live in the USA, don't have any influence over it and just want to get on with their job. Or would you like it if a whole bunch of websites you relied on started disappearing because of some political fight in the EU.
