Have you looked at raspberry pi clones built around FPGAs?
I didn't even know these existed! From a googling I can only find hats/daughter boards for existing raspberry pis. Is that what you mean or are there ones that are all in one?
I own a parallela with a Zynq1020 fpga and a form factor similar to a raspberry pi.
Here is somehing that costs around a hundred dollars (a bit higher) called Zynqberry.

You're right -- this has been a very rumorless year. Interesting given how many leaks we've seen over the last couple of years; I guess someone got serious about tightening up. Or, of course, there's nothing much coming.
You're dead right on the laptop lineup. Touchbar, whatever, I don't think that's an enormous issue one way or the other -- but the incoherency of the tech specs matters a bunch.

I disagree, I think they are doing a full about-face with these latest generation of garbage MBPs and I am hopeful for the refreshes. A lesson many will learn the hard way, eventually, is you don't scorn your power users because they are an endless source of evangelism and free marketing for your product.
Also, they're literally the developers for the mobile platform. iOS has a very long way to go before you can develop on it.
iOS is not particularly different from OSX. That's why Apple developers get to use a super fast simulator instead of the dog slow emulator we Android developers are stuck with.

#36I hope at some point these chips make their way into an Apple laptop.
I think its only a matter of time before apple unveils what's basically high spec clamshell iPad pro and stops making new macbooks.
I could see them doing something like the Surface where you have the detachable iPad, but a more powerful rig when its attached.

I emphatically agree with every point. I am in the exact same position and feel exactly the same. I bought a 2016 13” MacBook Pro and got rid of it because it just wasn’t... better. Still using a laptop and a desktop from 2013. And waiting...

Seriously, a high power SBC at a reasonable price point would be insanely useful for projects like portable MAME cabinets, video transcoders, scene displays, etc... Apple chips famously have Imagination GPUs that have zero open-source support, a far ways off even from Nvidia. They are the absolute worst. That's before you consider that all the stuff Apple did to that poor ARM probably means you can't even boot Linux into a terminal on it today.
