META managed to spend a lot of money into AI to achieve inferior results. Something must change for sure, and you don't want an LLM skeptic at home, in my opinion, especially since the problem is not what LeCun is saying right now (LLMs are not the straight path to AGI), but the fact it used to say for some time that LLMs were just statistical models, stochastic parrots (and this is a precise statement, something mos…

If they're not stochastic parrots, what are they in your opinion?

Maybe it's time for Bell Labs 2? I guess everyone is racing towards AGI in a few years or whatever so it's kind of impossible to cultivate that environment.

This sounds crazy. We don't even know/can't define what human intelligence is or how it works , but we're trying to replicate it with AGI ?

stretching the infinite game is exactly that, yes, "This is the way"

Man, why did no one tell the people who invented bronze that they weren’t allowed to do it until they had a correct definition for metals and understood how they worked? I guess the person saying something can’t be done should stay out of the way of the people doing it.

I'm not sure what 'inventing bronze' is supposed to be. 'Inventing' AGI is pretty much equivalent to creating new life, from scratch. And we don't have an idea on how to do that either, or how life came to be.

Most of the folks on this topic are focused on Meta and Yann’s departure. But, I’m seeing something different. This is the weirdest technology market that I’ve seen. Researchers are getting rewarded with VC money to try what remains a science experiment. That used to be a bad word and now that gets rewarded with billions of dollars in valuation.

Agree on weirdness but not on the idea of funding science experiments:

>> away from long-term research toward commercial AI products and large language models - LLMs

This feels more like what I see every day: the people in charge desperately looking for some way - any way - to capitalize on the frenzy. They're not looking to fund research; they just want to get even richer. It's pets.ai this time.

These are not the same.

Yeah, this time is different. Really

If an LLM can pass a bar exam, isn't that at least a decent proof of concept or working model?

I love this application of AI the most but as many have stated elsewhere: mathematical precision in law won't work, or rather, won't be tolerated.

My man, math is pattern matching, not magic. So is logic. And computation. Please learn the basics before you discuss what LLMs can and can't do.

I'm no expert on math but "math is pattern matching" really sounds wrong. Maybe programming is mostly pattern matching but modern math is built on theory and proofs right?

Nah, its all pattern matching. This is how automated theorem provers like Isabelle are built, applying operations to lemmas/expressions to reach proofs.

Ah that's interesting, mine is omnipresent and occasionally bad enough I have to take days off work as I can't read my own code; it's like there's a baseline of it that occasionally flares up at random. Were you born with visual snow or did you acquire it later in life? I developed it as a teenager, and it was worsened significantly after a fever when I was a fresher. Also do you get comorbid headaches with yours out…

I developed it later in life. The tinnitus came earlier (and isn't as a result of excessive sound exposure as far as I know), but in my (unscientific) opinion they are different manifestations (symptoms) of the same underlying issue – a missing or faulty noise filter on sensory inputs to the brain. Thankfully I don't get comorbid headaches – in fact I seldom get headaches at all. And even on the odd occasion that I d…

Interesting, definitely agree it likely shares an underlying cause with tinnitus. It's also linked to migraine and was sometimes conflated with unusual forms of migraine in the past, although it's since been found to be a distinct disorder. There's been a few studies done on visual snow patients, including a 2023 fMRI study which implicated regions rich in glutamate and 5HT2A receptors.

I actually suspected 5HT2A might be involved before that study came out, since my visual distortions sometimes resemble those caused by psychedelics. It's also known that both psychedelics and anecdotally from patient's groups SSRIs too can cause a similar symptoms to visual snow syndrome, I had a bad experience with SSRIs for example but serotonin antagonists actually fixed my vision temporarily - albeit with intolerable side-effects so I had to stop.

It's definitely a bit of a faff that people have never heard of it, I had to see a neuro-ophthalmologist and a migraine specialist to get a diagnosis. On the other hand being relatively unknown does mean doctors can be willing to experiment. My headaches at least are controlled well these days.

> 2 Trillion dollars in Capex to get code generators with hallucinations You assume that's the only use of it. And are people not using these code generators? Is this an issue with a lost generation that forgot what Capex is? We've moved from Capex to Opex and now the notion is lost, is it? You can hire an army of software developers but can't build hardware. Is it better when everyone buys DeepSeek or a non-US versi…

Deepseek somehow didn't need $2T to happen.

all that led up to Deepseek needed more. don't forget where it all comes from.
