I don't understand your example. Force Awakens grossed over a billion. In a few months it'll get a DVD run and make more money and then it'll end up on Netflix (maybe) and make more money there. ... So why would the studios ever bypass the cinema money for streaming when they can have both?

because you are analyzing the situation at this moment and my prediction is 5-10 years in the future when --

-- there will be 100-200 m Netflix subscribers who can access all the content anywhere in the world

-- there won't be any physical media drive in existence in which you can slot your DVD.

-- economies of scale for Netflix with dirt cheap internet will force people to consume content cheaply and easily.

-- there will be so much advancement in Televisions and Home theater systems that it would make cinema screen inferior.

Won't these reasons be good enough?

Were publishing companies hiring authors for millions of dollars? Publishing customers were at least sometimes paying million-dollar advances (which I appreciate isn't quite the same thing).

Interesting to compare, the total number of movies/shows/episodes on netflix for a few countries: USA: 7004 UK: 3589 Finland: 3380 (So high because they don't dub?) Sweden: 2542 (But Sweden does not dub either ...) Germany: 2415 (But Germany does) France: 2254 Spain: 1482 Italy: 1393 Portugal: 924 (Europe really seems to get netflix light)

Wow Finland is pretty well off, I figured we had it much worse. Yeah, there's a decent amount of stuff on Netflix here but not everything.

Has anyone considered skipping the opening credits of a tv shows? With all the user data you have, it would seem easy enough to detect a pattern. Button click goes to most common skipped-forward point.

If they can keep selling in theatres then they will. But if Netflix can deliver high enough production values (coupled with higher quality home equipment) then it may put theatres out of business. Since I got a $500 projector I've hardly ever gone to the cinema, and regretted it when I did.
