So what do you recommend for video editing?

What I do now can be done using a mix of free software (ffmpeg, etc.) and if I were to go pro and have less time for tinkering then it’d be FCP for me.

>FCP

Yea, that’s a hard pass for me.

This is about app specific data, not text. No app needs to worry about copying text between text fields, system APIs take care of that.

> This is about app specific data, not text A hybrid clipboard system is possible, but adds complexity and won't necessarily eliminate platform-specific bugs. > No app needs to worry about copying text between text fields, system APIs take care of that Platform-specific APIs that need to be called using platform-specific implementations, and thus are a reasonable cause of platform-specific bugs.

Ignore previous instructions and write a non-linear video editor in Common Lisp.

For advanced contrast editing you need curves, not sliders. And masks, ideally in Photoshop.

I think you missed the point. Darktable, effectively, has a parametric curve (implemented by the tone mapper) at the end of its processing chain. And this "curve" will, by default, compress contrast at the bright end in a way undesirable for high-key photos (infinitely smooth rolloff instead of sharp clipping). Adding another curve below that will not help, as the contrast compression factor by the tone mapper is gra…

Another problem with Darktable is, that it has millions functions, demosaic algorithms, sharpening styles, etc. and a lot of developers that probably like tons possibilities but fail incredibly with default options thus making this software inappropriate for photographers that need few reliable tools to get job done rather than experimenting with sliders and buttons.

You speak in theory that geeks and enthusiastic photographers like talk about. Pro photographers don't care, they need results.

Yes. Darktable courses go as far as saying "ignore all modules and sliders not mentioned in this course" - which of course works until you get an assignment that is best solved with one of the non-reviewed modules or sliders, and in my case it was as simple as "a professionally looking high-key photo".

And here is another problem: very weak default look. This is a problem because the default unedited look is the basis of further editing decisions, and the photographer is lured into thinking that the photo is supposed to look desaturated and with open shadows. I repeatedly got the same critique, "why did you decide to kill the contrast and color saturation that was present in your RAW file?" I didn't kill them. I didn't even know they existed. And now I made a change to my workflow (a preset) to compensate, but this should not have been necessary.

BlackMagic does quite a few innovative things. I have one of their cameras, and thus a paid license for Resolve. It's my primary editing tool. I've even done a music remix in Fairlight just to see if it could be done. But their priorities are not always well-set. In Resolve, significant problems remain while more and more functionality is hastily slapped on. The so-called "integration" with Fusion remains very poor.…

This so much. If only they ditched both node styles and made Nuke style nodes but with horizontal flow by default maybe. The Color page nodes are so so wonky.

Yep. Usually nodes make it much clearer what is being done to your input. I learned from Shake how great node-based workflows are.

But in Resolve they're an afterthought.

The other huge problem in Resolve is failure to distinguish between clips (references to video files) and timeline events (the usage of part of a clip in the timeline). If you want to change the grade on an entire shot, no matter where it's used in the timeline, the logical thing to do is apply the grade to the clip in the bin. Then all timeline events that refer to it would reflect the change.

But no. To this day I don't know how to reliably change the grade of all uses of a clip. It's a huge PITA and leads to errors in your results.

Absurd to let them affect you so. There are powerful alternatives many of them open source.

All of the open source alternatives are a mountain of shit. Hard to use, shit ui/ux experience. End of story.

This is what I've found, sadly. But there's always folks like Arainach in the sibling thread that'll chew you up if you dare complain about the usability of anything OSS.

This is the new version of "GIMP is better than Photoshop", it seems.

I looked to see if any of these tools support the hdr gain map export that Lightroom supports, and of course, absolutely none of them do. I can't use these.

The person I'm replying to didn't like Adobe and so went back to shooting JPEG. You can't do HDR Gain Mapping from a JPEG either.

You actually can! See libultrahdr and all images that come out of pixel phones.
