In the UK, pull the socket front off and look what the wires actually are. I have seen electricians use cat 5 to carry phone lines several times. It is a mixture between having cat5 already in stock, and future proofing I think. If it is cat 5 then just put an RJ45 socket on it. As others have said, you can also try running ethernet on a phone line, you might not get gigabit, but you might get more than what is comin…

Is there a way of testing two points to see if they can communicate with each other before I go to the trouble of wiring to a rj45 endpoint? I'm not convinced socket A can talk to socket B when, for example, socket B is in an extension, or... or...

Short two wires on one end, go to the other end with a multimeter and test for continuity between those two wires on your lowest resistance range. If it is infinity then no connection. If it is some low number then there is a connection

There is no more sterling available because the tax burden has just been shifted from VAT to employer NICs.

There is more sterling available to FX, which is where the exchange rate is set. The tax flow has been moved one step along. So the uk importer doesn’t pay the tax (on the goods), the uk exporter does (on their staff). That changes the sterling flow across the boundary and shifts the exchange rate. Quite where it settles between importers paying more and exporters receiving more is market/productivity determined.

You disconnect the phone cable from the socket, attach a 50m Ethernet cable to it and pull the phone cable from the other side of your house. I just got the fiber installed, took less than 10 minutes, excluding the replacement of phone port to Ethernet port.

I’ve never seen Ethernet cable being stapled, ever. Or any other cable for that matter.

Your always put it in a sheath and fix the sheath with whatever you want but the cable is free.

Putting the cable naked inside the wall is barbarian.

Those poor people voted for something for which they were explicitly mislead. The results of Brexit have in no ways made their lives better.

In other words "democracy" - people with an agenda tell their version of its benefits. Saying "the vote was invalid because the poor uneducated people were too stupid to realise they were being lied to"

Honestly, most UK houses start out with a single ISP-provided wifi router, situated somewhere close to where the data cable enters the building. For a lot of homes, that's enough to provide good-enough internet throughout the building. The issues arise when you've got a larger building, thick walls, lots of things competing for the same frequency band, a less great router, or you need the very lowest latency.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did this to lower the support workload, since I have several 2.4Ghz devices that fail to connect to WiFi at all if I put both bands on the same SSID. I intentionally separated them for that reason and portable devices like phones know how to switch between multiple SSIDs based on signal strength anyway.

Over what distance? Sounds like something is broken… Sure all the pairs are punched down in the right order, cables aren’t crushed, etc.? I’ve had 2.5GbE running over old in-wall Cat5 in old buildings on short to medium (15-30m) runs with no issues…

Roughly 15 metres. Almost certainly a cabling issue, although frustratingly the electrician who installed it says that they think it's fine. I've got a ubiquiti U7 AP connected to a USW lite 8 via POE, and it negotiates GbE, but then falls back to E.

I solved this yesterday. It was in fact a cable problem. I think the initial GbE negotiation was a red herring from ubiquiti as two of the pairs were flipped.
