Reductionism is the only way humanity ever progressed on anything.

Yes but reductions have implicit or explicit assumptions. When our reductions give non-sensical results (10 bits/sec) we should not take these results seriously/understand them as an artifact of our reductions, rather than taking them seriously and giving them ontological existence.

I don’t think a difference of this magnitude meaningfully changes what the paper is talking about. They already have other human behaviors in their table with bit rates up to 5 times higher. Even if you set it at 100bps it wouldn’t change much. They’re addressing a difference of eight orders of magnitude. Making it seven instead of eight isn’t all that important.

So, one high-performance, high-power, general-purpose processor to handle the foreground task, and a bunch of low-power processors for background tasks. Looks like ARM got it right with its big.LITTLE architecture. :)

The low power processors are not general purpose, they are fpga's, they get trained and then are highly optimized at their task.

And they stay in the brain even when not used. You can ride a bike or play a piano years after stopping.

There's not a cutoff for "ok, this number is too big for bits". Take whatever that mind-bogglingly huge number is, take the logarithm base 2, there you go, that's how many bits you need.

Yes no problem to imagine or process numbers, how big they might be. I just don’t see how that makes a practical sense in the context of the article. Doing a full "scan" of a tiny biological material to study it, ok. Doing a full scan of "our body" as MrMcCall describe (and reject it)? I don’t think it’s possible in a near future. I totally agree with Asraelite in theory but don’t think that will be apply in reality.

I think I see the disconnect. "Practical application" here does not mean "doing a scan". Don't let the word "bit" lure you into thinking we want to do something on a computer. This is using bits purely as a unit of measurement of information quantity. It applies practically in reality the same way any other unit of measurement applies. The same way we can ask how much something weighs or how fast it's going, we can ask how much information it has.

What if you are typing not an English text, but a series of random letters? This gets you to 5-6 bits per letter.

I think this gets into what you consider to be “information.” Random noise is high entropy and thus high information in one sense, and zero information in another.

Well the information used in the article is the classical shannon's information, so the former. Though I suspect that the entropy of what we can actually "randomly" type is not that high.
