This is so weird and true. The most unfortunate thing is that a lot of these data enrichment platform where they encourage these workflows but its clear that end person doesn't appreciate it.

#273saw this and got paranoid about my own repos. checked the commit history and sure enough my personal email was plastered across years of commits. spent a couple hours hacking together a scanner — github.com/vexorkai/git-shield. runs locally, tells you which repos are leaking your email and how to fix it going forward. it's my own project fwiw, nothing fancy but it does the job.

I reported spammers ~5 times to GH, and every time the account went down in a couple of hours. Obviously mileage may vary, but I don't want the whole HN to think this process is completely broken. Please keep reporting spammers, usually it works.
To confirm: is this email spammers, or spam on GitHub? I've had decent success with on-GitHub action (I'd wager ~80% action taken), but the effort to report email spammers doesn't seem worthwhile.
I did report email spam to GH, and both got reply for them and seen their page go 404.
It was years ago though. Since I've enabled "hide my email" setting, and set that GH-generated email to my git config, "try my project" spam ceased to be an issue.
