Por que no los dos? Just dock your iPad in the office and get a desktop class experience. Pick it up and go and have your same apps and sessions and data anywhere. Would be nice. It's the experience I had with a Surface but I get Windows isn't applicable to all users and workloads.

The mouse driven experience on iPad OS is awful. And switching between apps leads to apps suspending themselves in the background when I don't want them to. And Safari aggressively suspends browser tabs on iPad so you lose any kind of web page state.

I bought iPad Pro M4 and I am yet to find a use case for it. Combined with non-secure cloud backup in the UK, I see it as a toy device. Watch YouTube, casually browse web (I am yet to install VPN). So far the most use I had with it was recording meetings, so that later I can relisten. If I was able to run Ubuntu on it or even macOs - that would have been a different story...

iPad is also the best ebook reader in my opinion, which is pretty much the only reason I have one.

Reading books on a LCD is miserable compared to e ink.

Yeah… but you had to bring an iPad? I’d choose the laptop every time as I can do all of that in addition to using a non-bullshit browser if I need to do something online.

Yes, I rather bring an iPad than a laptop, easier lighter and smaller to travel with, also better for movie watching in the plane. Laptop is hard to fit on a table.

as someone else mentioned, lots of apps to run local models. I also wrote my own app, in Apple’s app store, that uses Apple’s system model.

There's a whole spectrum of use cases between artist and software developer. Honestly most people that I see at work just use Office software, web browser, and Teams.

None of that requires the power of an M5.

Neither does developing software given we've all been doing it for ages despite the M5 not existing, still nice to have though.

Plus you get more longevity, I'll keep my M4 iPad Pro until doesn't get OS updates anymore. I still feel no impetus to update my M1 laptop despite it being 4 years old.

This seems like one of those things some people are more sensitive to than others. To my eyes, an LCD or an OLED is just as good as e-ink for reading, except in very bright sunlight.

Can you teach me how to do that? Every single Google result (and my own experience) say you can't.

I recently got rid of my M1 iPad Pro, so I can't verify (and you might be right).

I recall: using stage manager, plugging into monitor via USB-C, going into Settings to disable mirroring/enable as external display, ensuring you have a mouse/keyboard connected to the iPad, and then just clicking the iPad screen off with the lock/unlock button.

Modern software is absurdly bloated, no matter how you look at it. I started programming on an Apple II, but the first computer I ran anything approaching an "IDE" on was an Amiga 500 with 3 megs of RAM. (Lattice C!) Did you run an IDE and a separate emulator/simulator for a completely different computer? The video memory of a modern computer is much more than 3MB of RAM. Why wouldn’t Apple rather you spend more on an iPad Pro + keyboard than a MacBook Air?

Different times, but software is exponentially more bloated now. Hardware giveth, software taketh away.

You have a good point. My guess is they'd rather you'd buy both. You can get an older M1 or M2 MacBook Air for cheaper than an iPad Pro + keyboard.
