We just enabled leap second smearing on chrony.

I think that's the only reasonable way to handle this kind of thing, though I bet that accurate time matters enough in fintech that you'd still have some cases where you'd need access to the "true" wall time in order to stamp logs for auditing or whatever.

agreed. i’m sick of being gaslit twice a year when i go to bed, set an alarm for 8 hours from now, and instead it wakes me after 7 or 9 hours while insisting it’s really been 8 hours.

it happened again to me just a few weeks ago with the DST switch. i was so mad when i learned that everything had felt off the day of the switch because it was off that i just set all my clocks to UTC. no more gaslighting: my clocks all accurately measure intervals with no tricks, which is exactly what i most want out of my clock.

I wonder: Why is Daylight Savings/Normal Time not implemented using monotically increasing hours? Day goes up to hour 23 one time of year and hour 25 the other instead of doing a clock hour twice. Would be weird to be able to have 23-hour and 25-hour days. But this seems to be how leap seconds are handled (one 61 second minute)?

Eliminating leap seconds was only a half measure. They should have finished the job by adding rockets to the Earth to ensure that its rotation will stay at exactly 24 hours. If they weren't going to do that, then why eliminate leap seconds? Kicking the problem down the road doesn't really solve the problem, it just makes it worse later.

It rotates itself in 23 hours and 56 minutes relative to the fixed stars. It rotates itself in 24 hours relative to the Sun. It is Earth's rotation relative to the Sun what people care about in most situations, because day and night depend on that, not on the position relative to some far-away stars.

Currently software has to be built to accommodate leap seconds. They happen frequently enough that you'll find out within a few years whether your software breaks when time suddenly skips forward or backward. If we kick the can down the road such that eventually we'll need to add a leap minute, we're going to end up with software that was never written to expect time to change in such a way, hasn't had a real world t…

I've always thought that the best way would just have leap seconds every six months, and have it be ± 1 second no matter what - so sometimes you'd go back a second twice in a row, and then go forward a second to get back to correct. That'd test all the software paths.

It would test all the software paths in production though. Bad software would still fail and need last minute patches every 6 months.

I'm for this. Get rid of timezones, AM, PM, DST, leap years, seconds, all of it! Imagine having to know just one time. It takes a bit to wrap your head around. But only because we've accepted all the confusion for so long. The sun is still going to be "up" in one part of the world and "down" in another. The little numbers on your clock don't change that. Why can't it be the same little numbers everywhere?

How do you know whether the sun is up or down in a place when all places have the same time?

It’s fundamentally the same lookup.
