Anybody concerned about these issues should consider donating to their favourite non profit that can have an impact that works in the area. Most HN users can afford $20/year pretty easily (others could afford $200/month and not even notice it) As they say, “Put your money where your mouth is.”

Would you name some please? Do you mean like ACLU (BCCLA in Canada)

Wouldn't the Canadian equivalent be Canadian Civil Liberties Association, not British Columbia Civil Liberties Association?

> this subpoena requested a wide variety of information we don’t have, including the target’s name, address, correspondence, contacts, groups, calls.

Couldn't they easily use the phone number associated with the Signal account to find the target's name? Even if the account uses a pre-paid SIM without a credit card attached, the telco could still reveal the location of the device and probably its IMEI, which could be used to find other SIMs associated with it.

I think Signal should stop pretending they're an anonymous service when their identity is based on phone numbers.

The ACLU is not what it once was. I will not donate to them. Even the EFF is growing questionable. I would definitely be curious what recommendations people have.

What is wrong with the EFF?

Second this EFF is where I would go to support this myself snd do monthly. ACLU has lost its way picking civil rights to support or not.

Which actual rights is ACLU supposedly failing to support?

Or perhaps more likely, they'll go the lavabit/CALEA route, and order that their platform be modified to allow wiretapping, at which point Signal must choose between either complying with such requests, or going out of business. If that happens, hopefully usage of p2p messaging apps like Briar or Status will gain more traction and usage.

>complying with such requests, or going out of business Complying with such a request is going out of business.

I mean I do. EFF, Wikimedia, ACLU (Only EFF is really for this particular issue though)

I stopped supporting the ACLU when they started doing this: Fighting against due process: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/see-you-court-aclu-sues... claiming there's no men: https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1196877415810813955 and this: https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1199725066302308354 Telling families to discuss pronouns: https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1250795126584217602 and this: https://twitter.com/ACLU/st…

In other words, you're transphobic and you think everyone else should go along with you. To put it rather mildly, that's not what ACLU is about and that's not even what they should be about.

You don't get to decide what is "really" about freedom. You shouldn't try. Leave that to the people whose rights are being threatened in the specific case in question.

that's probably the least worthy of the ones in the list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Guy_Macon/Wikipedia_has_C...

While I applaud Signal's response I expect this entire event (subpoena and response) will be provided as one of the exhibits to congress by the Department of Justice to justify their request that it be unlawful to provide such services. The DoJ will say, "See, here is this horrible crime we are investigating and because this company chose to make it impossible for law enforcement, with a warrant and a subpoena to get…

Bonus points for sending the Unix timestamps in millis ... I hope the lawyer who got this response has to hire a consultant too translate it for the court!

For supporting "this" very specifically, ACLU (in the form of their 501(c)(3) foundation) is directly involved as legal counsel to Signal, so donating to EFF would be less relevant to "this" than donating to either Signal (also a non-profit) or to the ACLU Foundation. But, sure, the EFF is also a good organization.

If your concern is specifically the ACLU's disagreement with recent Supreme Courts on the intended scope of Second Amendment rights, the EFF isn't going to address that either since it's out of scope for their mission. But that's in no way relevant to what Signal had to deal with here, an area in which I think ACLU and EFF are pretty well aligned.

I am out of the loop on this one. What has the ACLU become today, and why is the EFF growing questionable?

For the ACLU, they have lost the institutional interest in fighting for free speech. Fighting for the rights of digital Nazis to march, so to speak, is not something the ACLU defends today.

Here's a recent NYT article discussing this change in the organization: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/06/us/aclu-free-speech.html
